i thought i would bring this all to light, with supplements and food stuffs becoming more and more expensive due to high demand, whey protein prices are going up, this is life and there is nothing u can do about it, but the next time u walk into a shop and u see the bargin of a life time on whey,be sure to check the following things :

first off check the list of ingredients :
when you read the ingredients list, supplement companies list the highest concentration of ingredient first. so when buying a whey protein u will get whey concentrate, whey isolate, whey hydroslate, these are the usual suspects expected when buying a whey protein, if you see soy then it is a protein blend.

check for for fillers :
creamer, maltodextrin, dextrose, those are fillers, if you see a higher carb content on a whey protein then u are most likely getting fillers in your products.

know your nutritional contents :

when looking at the big block that tells you what amount of protein, carbs and fats you are getting when buying a whey protien make sure that a whey concentrate has got the following per 100g :
80g of protein unless its chocolate flavour that contains cocoa powder(check the list of ingredient) as cocoa powder does take up some of the product. 6g of carbs, and +/-6g of fat per serving. per 30g serving of whey u should have 23-24g of protein and 2g of carbs and 1.5g of fat per 30g serving.

if you are getting a whey isolate, you should be getting per 100g 90g of protein, and little to 0 carbs and fats, maybe 1g of each per 100g, a whey isolate is 90% protein. so a 25g serving of isolate should be 22.5g of protein per serving.

so if you look on the shelf and see a product that has less than 80g of protein per serving on a concentrate and 90g of protein per isolate you are getting swindled by a supplement company.

just to put u into context, here is the following label break down on the following whey labels :
usn 100% whey protein plus : 100g : 68.3g protein, 5g carbs, and 14.2g of fat
biogen isowhey : 100g : 67g protein,21.2g carbs, and 5g of fats
evox 100% whey :100g : 76g protein, 6g carbs,3.6g fats
SSN 100% whey : 100g : 79.2g protein, 7g carbs,5g fats

those are all the ones i felt like looking up, so you can make your mind the next time when choosing a whey when walking through dischem, make sure you are getting what you are paying for!!

u gonna have small variences in the contents, also depends if casein protein is used as it has a higher carb but lower fat content...whey should be the consistency of fat free milk alot like water, with color and flavour, thats it, if it goes thick there is usually additives.

Have any of you tried basic supplements? They dont seem too expensive and their protein per 100g is extremely high even on their mass gainers.

The one thing that I have been wondering is, how do we know that they are even giving the correct information on their tubs.
Are the being tested on a random basis by some regulatory body.
Surely if the info is incorrect this falls under the CPA.
I have heard some guys at the gym stating that some brand lie about the true carb content of their whey.

Yes they probably do, that's why u needed a trusted reputible brand with integrity to know what u are getting inside,I have stated this before, but I persoanlly feel that ssn is that company, tey do no compromise on quality to keep with price wars, they make sure quality is always high.

SSN has been stated as the brand that does actually contain the correct amount of carbs,
But flippen hell I paid R277 for them 3 years ago and now they are asking R560, a bit insane.

Welcome to the price of international raw material price increases. Don't shop at dischem then, look at places like chrome, xtreme nutrition, musclejunkie store to name a few.

Most baby food companies are now using whey protein in their formulations so the higher demand on the whey supply has also driven prices up as well as the rand dollar exchange has also driven those prices through the roof, remember 5 years ago we were sitting with the rand at 6.5-7.0 to the dollar, now its close to 9.50, so that also drives costs up.

I see what you are saying about "reputable brands with integrity" and id actually like to believe that something like that exists but how can we establish who's who when there is no regulatory body ie FDA approving the statements of these companies?

where there are no rules there is major room for lies, I believe that every single supplement company cuts corners where they can to varying degrees...

for example, now that whey is so expensive, if the owner can state that a certain product has 100g of protein and actually put 70g you will still continue to purchase the product because you believe it to be "reputable" and you will never know the difference, the consumer wont know the diff between 100g and 70g whilst that 30g protein he's saving on each product mass produced is going to sky rocket his profits

Maybe i have lost faith in people but if you could make R500 000 or R1 000 000 CONSEQUENCE FREE which would you honestly take, these guys dont start supplement companies for our benefit or as a favour, like everything else they are motivated by profit and profit alone...

anyway i could be completely wrong this is all just my opinion
