Dog Food... was created by MikeM1
Hi all,

strange topic but Ive been searching around for some info and I havent been getting much.

What do you feed your dogs?

Ive got two boerboels, 9 months and a 10 week old puppy. I feed them SuperVet which is Vets Choice but in a different bag (so i am told). This type of food is expensive and as my puppy grows so does his food intake. Ive calculated that dog food is going to cost me about R900 a month - a 20kg bag of SuperVet for large breed puppies costs about R560. They will be eating about 1kg a day when a little bigger.

So i was wondering if there is anything out there that is as good as "vets food" but a little cheaper. I know the vets always say that "vets food" is the best but they do sell the stuff so im never sure if the answer is genuine.

I understand that an inferior product can lead to joint issues etc etc.

A friend of mine mentioned they compared Montego with Vets Choice and the macronuutrients were pretty much the same and that Montego is half the price.

So ja, any info would be helpfull.

Sweet

Hi bro try Optimizer, its about R260 for 20kg. My boerboel eats that and a bag lasts about a month and she's a big girl at +-70kg. When you say they will eat about 1kg per day do you mean each? If its each that sounds a bit too much. Iv heard a lot of rumors about vets choice and personally think its overrated! She's never had any joint probs, although when they do its not always the food, boerboels have risk of joint probs and hip displasia because of their size. Also split their meals up in two, morning and night. If they feed too much at a time their stomach could overturn and that opperation will cost you 2-5k. They are a awesome breed bro, look after them and you will be a happy pet owner.

Not sure about which dog food is cheaper for a similar quality, but im pretty sure that with more expensive foods, the serving size drops. so maybe get the weight of your dogs, calculate the amount of 'vets food' you would need in a month, then do the same for other brands.

ive got two GSDs, one is 45-50kg, the other 35-40kg. i feed them eukanuba, its kak expensive, but i have peace of mind that they getting a very good quality meal. it costs me about R1000 a month.

pain is just temporary...

Thanks bro I will give it a look, will i find it in a normal supermarket or petstore?
My meals are split twice a day and the 1kg is for both of them. Currently the bigger of the two is on just under 500g a day and the baby is on about 300g a day (but that will obviously increase as he goes).

Never owned my own BBs but stayed on a property where the owner had three and yes i agree they are an awesome breed. Big so the mess up the garden but they have awesome temperaments.

I have poms...they eat eukanuba, I won't feed them cheap supermarket dog food as most of them use low quality protein sources, eukanuba's protein source for their dog food is chicken.

you could just feed them wiskas. pure fish. i worked with my dad ones at this factory where they make wiskas. they use fish fillets. the staff eat it on their lunch times with their pap.

Montego is a very good dogfood! Nost people think its crappy because its cheap. They actually import all the "vleis meel" from Europe and make it here. What is important in animal foods is the bio-availability. Montego has a higher score here than expensive brands like Eukanuba, Hills, vets choice ect

Im in the business and after 12years in the game ive seen
plenty of comebacks from clients on Montego,Vets choice or Optiwoof is
a much better option even for a little more cash-The Montego doesnt have the backing
from the vet profession.

Guys do any of you mix it up for the dogs?

I Like to give mine dogs Pedigree in the mornings and Pets Mince mixed with rice at night.

No one has mentioned Pedigree! Are they sh*t? I though they where up there....

And whats your opinions on pets mince and rice? It costs only about R10 per night for pets mince and rice is cheap....

Been out the loop for a while - My last Boerboel died a couple of years ago. Montego was all the rage with the breeders at that time. I bought mine from the owner of the sa champ at that time.

Best Dogs! Post some pics!

Why cant they eat raw meat/poultry?
Then the whole pip/cyanide story.... cmon man. The pip will pass through without getting digested.
Then, that cyanide isnt dangerous. And if it was you would have to consume a truck-load. In fact - apricot seeds have been proven to be successfull in fighting cancer.

haha i think its more for neurotic people, in my opinion if they didnt have us feeding them they would be just fine, they would of eaten raw meat etc in the wild, and not had anyone to cook it, and it would of probably being lying in the sun rotting for a couple days...

Dogs shouldn't be eating human food. Diet is just as important for a dog as it is with us. And no cooked bones they splinter and hurt your dogs. I know a lot of people who don't eat right and still look fine aswell but not as healthy as someone on a good diet

Dont agree much with that article, have had lots of dogs during my life and spoiled them with most of the stuff mentioned there and never saw any problems and they lived full long lives...

Dogs come from the wild were they would eat raw meat and anything they can scavenge, so I doubt they will be so sensitive as stated there... More like some sensitive little breeds that could have problems...

I give him dog food, but supermarket stuff bro and I try different stuff each week, but If we had a braai and theres a steak left its chopped and served as a snack. I dont complicate things too much. 12 years is old man and that little boy is still ANNIE BRAND!

NO bones and fatty unhealthy stuff though. All I mean is I give him supermarket food with atleast 1 or 2 human food snacks a day.

Lets go!

I rate www.afgrianimalfeeds.co.za/jock.asp better than Montego - compare the ingredients.

Jock is recommended by several SA Boerboel associations, and my supplier is also a Boerie breeder. My pavement special flourishes on it, and it's relatively affordable, at around R270/20kg.

I'm in the dog breeding game, have been for ages.

The reason a lot of Boerboel associations recommend a certain product is simple, that product sponsors that association, its just business.

Montego is a really good product, i have fed many litters on it. A newer product in JHB called Complete is superb, its what i'm feeding now and i have some of the top dogs in the country. I have had friends try Jock on their Rotties, and have reported skin issues.

Remember that the protein % of petfood means jackshit. In there they also take the protein count of the maize into account, which dogs can't use.
