Well I was not so much looking to buy supps, but more on the prospect of how a potential supp store would do in that area or surrounding areas

Market research..... - I wouldn't look in this area, its flooded. Unless you can offer something unique.

That's what I was thinking, although I am sure that there are some areas that has a lack of these stores. A while ago, I did make contact with Met-Rx USA as well as their sister companies and they sent me down 2 huge boxes of samples, only had to pay for shipping :cheer: anyways, at that time I wasnt in the position to really market it and take it further, so Im hoping to maybe try and get into the right area for those kinds of products to flourish

The more competition the better! Low price news spread by word of mouth like wild fire and your store will flourish. Open with crappy prices and you will fold quickly.

If you have the finances to buy in massive bulk and compete with the market leaders in popular areas, you might stand a chance. Smaller suppliers get squashed very quickly by the bigger big boys once they have competition... its a strategic move.

Also remember that the bigger guys have 120 day invoicing, if you can carry yourself for 120days and still cover overheads and and and and, then ye.

If you want to get in, you have to identify a unique market and focus on that, otherwise you will simply be taken over or close shop....

I've sort of identified the market i'm aiming for. Its a strange business tho, places like Dischem have huge buying power compared to places like say, Xtreme Nutrition but have you seen the Dischem prices on premium products?

Sure they have their crazy specials from time to time but I feel they mostly try and punt the USN, BioGen and Evox products. Come to the premium stuff and they just cannot compete

Have you estimated what your market share on your unique product will be compared to a similar product in a different brand..... That will determine your return on investment (ROI)

My personal opinion is that the supplement industry is flooded and that it's impossible to compete against the bigger guys when it comes to sales from products sitting on a store's shelves.

It is still possible to make some extra cash by selling to enthusiast groups like this one, but you will never match the established brands that you see in Dischem and Game stores.

You will need something pretty spectacular and unique to promote your brand and you better have it patented world wide or you can kiss your product good bye.

Thanks guys. I know it is very risky, no doubt about that. Its not something that I would just dive into, a lot of homework still needs to be done.

Speaking of unique products, have you guys seen Bulk Up Premium Sports Nutrition?

Just to add something: Remember don't forget that Dischem can also drop their prices or have big promotions as a response to a new competitor. They have mega capital and can probably even afford a little to zero mark-up on most supplements for very long. You need to keep this in scenario in mind before opening the business and ask yourself if this happens, will you be able to survive and feed your kids and pay their school fees.

Agree with Admin here. Unless you can put a popular name behind your supplements (like a championship bodybuilder or something), or offer a very unique product that only you can sell (like Admin says) you are screwed.

Yep, i get exactly what you're saying. I do have a brand thats very popular yet nobody seems to stock it in SA. I guess a better way of going about it would be to actually approach the chain stores and smaller supplement stores and supply them and based on that, possibly open up a store in the future

Haha I shall do indeed! Heard some decent reviews about what they stock, that finaflex and olimp or whatever....

2 reasons why I didnt buy anything:

1. I have never heard of any of the products they stock, so wasnt too sure how good they are.

2. This was constantly going through my mind while the guy was chatting to me about his products:

God I hate going to Dischem for that reason. I'll be looking for the whey, next thing I know the sales rep is criticizing my diet, requesting semen samples and trying to convert me to Mormonism. I don't know how I get myself into it.
