Differences in Whey Protein was created by ninjajuice
Hi Guys,

I'm currently on the hunt for some decent whey protein, I've been told that Optimum Nutrition is by far the best on the market. I also see that it won the bodybuilding.com award for best brand as well as best whey.

I went to dischem today to go and buy some but was harassed by one of the salesman. He actually pissed me of so much that I ended up leaving without buying anything. Now Optimum Nutrition Whey is rather pricey compared to the rest of the products I saw (including the Evox whey which this guy was desperately trying to get me to buy. R375 for 2.9KG)

Is Optimum really worth paying that much more for. What do you guys think of Evox (that deal seemed too good to be true, hence I didn't go for it. That and the fact that this guy cleary has a target to hit on the Evox range)

Are there massive differences between all the wheys or is it pretty much, much of a muchness?

How many of you have tried the BSSA stuff? How do you find the quality (sorry Ondier, just want an opinion from others) I'd rather support a forum friend ;) than a corporate as long as the stuff is good.

Whey is whey except for supps sa whey because it's so nice and sweet from all the fructose.
The difference is some brands use maybe more whey iso than concentrate.
But I think all of them just use enough iso to be able to say on the label that it has "far superior whey isolate" in it!
and if I'm not mistaken BSSA whey comes from the same supplier as the one Optimum uses!

At the end of the day Whey is Whey. The main two types of whey are Concentrate (usually 75-85% protein) and Isolate (90 plus % protein). Gold Standard is a mixture of both (which is kind of a rip considering how much you pay). Ondier's concentrate last time I checked was R110/kg and his Isolate R185/kg, both of which are top notch quality and as for the price, you cant beat it.

Yes it taste good, but quality is what you are after.Anyways that stuff makes me bloated and it's lower in protein than the normal whey's.

Thanks for the info guys. Guess I'll be buying from ondier then ;). Definitely would rather support him than a large corporate :)

Now the next question is do I go for unflavoured? Does flavouring add a lot of carbs or is it negligible ?

Nope the flavoring does not add much carbs.
The concentrate is unflavored and the iso is flavored!

I use his concentrate which is unflavored, great stuff but so is his flavored isolate, no need for concern about the flavoring with his whey though. Some companies are guilty of adding loads of sugars to their whey.

Better is relevant, it has a higher protein content

I have 40-60 grams post workout. Sometimes I substitute a whole food protein with a whey shake but rarely. Cottage cheese is my last protein on training days (has lots of casein protein)

At the end of the day the only time isolate is necessary and justified is when you are on a strict cutting diet and you CANNOT have the few carbs and fats that make up the other 20% of concentrate.
Other than those extreme circumstances, concentrate is cheaper and just as effective.

I personally prefer unflavoured simply because i never have whey on its own, it is always added to something else in the shaker to make a more complete nutrition source

Um, but im scared of needles...

I have bought a 1kg of each and mixed it together, to make 2kg.

Is this better/worse (% protein) than lets say a SSN or similar 100% whey protein?

DO i understand correct that I Can only by the cheaper concentrate unflav, and will work as well?

Spike what do you normally add with shake, i take it maybe peanut butter and what else?

The cheaper concentrate is fine, it just contain a bit of carbs and fats, no more than 20g per 100g in total. Just remember to adjust the amount you take to get the desired amount of protein

It doesnt taste too bad, depends what fruit and fruitjuice you put in... Bananas over power most flavours, and i find tropical fruit juice has the best flavour to it in a blend. Also just adjust amounts of dry/wet ingredients to desired consistancy... todays was a bit thick :/

Throw warm soapy water in afterwards and let it blend. That gets rid of almost everything

BSSA is as close to Optimum Nutrition as you'll get. The manufacturer is Glanbia, who own Optimum Nutrition.

I won't buy any other whey than BSSA isolate. The taste is fine, but even if it wasn't that doesn't matter. Too many people go on about the taste of the whey products... who cares? As long as the protein content is legit.
