why do you hold the bench press bar like that... you are going to break your thumbs... referring to the regular grip. He suggested "suicide" grip. He was also a middle age git with a paunch and no visible muscles... lol

When doing bench I dont have a spotter so I do full range as heavy as I can and then extra weight ...half and then quarter reps ...this big dude comes up to me and says " no Boetie u must go right down " and insists on spotting he graps the bar and now I am K*cking myself because there is a lot of weight on the bar. He helps take the bar off goes down and up for about six reps ...I didnt have to do anything just hang on to the bar he did all the work..No Boetie thats not how u spot ??? anyway I thanked him and moved on .

Not asked, but I saw a guy (skinnyish guy) end of last year walk up to another guy on the incline bench half way through a set, stop him half way through, tell him he's using to much weight, unpack his weights, and then tell told him to try again while he spotted him. I just staired in disbelieve.

Needless to say, the guy being helped finished his assisted set, and walked away.

That is so common, I don't think guys actually get the words "dead" "lift"

I think both are correct, you can either keep tension by not placing down the weight, or as the name says( initially intended) deadlift from the ground.

I think people say you must put the weight down cos guys will often let the weight drop down fast (which is fine), and allow it to bounce and then use the momentum gained from the bounce to lift the weight up again. If you bring it to a "DEAD" stop before it hits the ground and lift again it should be fine also...

I find that I lose my focus/rhythm if I put the bar down and let go.

I put down the bar for 1 second, dont regrip, nothing. Just put down and then lift again. Weights must be completely still. If I dont do it like that, I lose focus.

I find doing it like JR said works best for me, keeping tension on the back.
But both work

I've had a similar experience at westville VA doing deadlifts...
Some idiot started laughing at me during my sets and making fun of me to some chick he was flirting with.
Thankfully I wasn't on any gear or else I would have torn him a new arsehole.
So i just ignored him and carried on doing my thing...
Thankfully I don't go to that gym anymore.
