My buddy sent me the link to these protein testing results as found on the Dischem website. I can't find a date on when these results were posted, or any info on who performed the testing.

Some interesting results. I've been using SSA whey for some time now and am shocked at the placing in the results

What is the current consensus on USN? I know they've always gotten a bad rap from people in the know (in other words not your regular weekend-warrior who stumbles into the supplement aisle on a Saturday morning)? Have they improved? Based on a price/testing results ration their Hardcore GH Whey does very well (if these testing results are anything to go by).

I've compiled a spreadsheet with the price per kilogram included alongside the sorted testing results. Ill post it tomorrow once I'm at the office.

That is a really interesting read. I am assuming you meant SSN and not SSA?

I would imagine this changes from batch to batch though, perhaps even from tub to tub of the same batch depending on how well they mix their powders.


Supplements SA is shocking though!!
I wonder why Evox 100% Whey isn't highlighted when its 20% less than stated? What are they filling the rest of that 100g with if not protein?
IMO 25% less is not acceptable, unless I can pay for 75% of the asking price


I wonder how many members on this site consume protein shakes on a regular basis? I personally don't, I try get all my protein from the food I eat.

On dischem site it has the details of the test. Tested by University of Pretoria. Details and contact numbers of all the persons involved upto the Prof are available.

The most shocking result for me is BPI WHEY-HD. Because they pride themselves on the ChromeaDex certification.

Regarding USN, they probably the most tested SA brand. Most people don't believe it but it's true. They are now sold in 55 countries including USA.
They have different qualities of whey, from the 100% premium whey to the Whey 100 - ultra.


I have really close friends who do the finacial audit of dischem. So this is how I was able to have a chat with persons in the know working for dischem and get some of the facts.

Nope, based on lowest price available online (Chrome, Supllement World, Dischem etc). Lowest price for that USN I mention is actually in takealot.

I've filled in the last few top performing local brands. Again, the last highlighted column is one to pay attention to if you need to base your whey choice on budget, as many of us do...

Also added the "claimed" carbs/100, but based on this testing who knows if these figures can be trusted???

After all this now I wonder if my 30% discount i get on nutritech is going to be worth the protein content im losing.

Look at my figures, Nutri is still 2nd best bang for buck (2nd highest grams of protein per R1), so it's good to go. I'm actually going to Chrome during lunch to pick up a tub

Plus NT has all that independent testing that they've had done and punt on their site, so I think with a combo of the test results above and their own independent testing you can more or less still trust them.

Yes they may have an almost 13% difference between claimed and the Dischem test results, but then comparing just the test results to themselves and not the % difference to the label claims, and bringing in price like I have you can make a fairly educated decision.

Hope that all makes sense, it does in my head...

Interesting how good USN and BIOGEN look and how crap the low mark-up brands look...

i use usn whey complete precision usn, awesome stuff works for me. its the only products i use as post and pre work out.

just amazes me that biogen (dischem's brand) and usn ( company that pays dischem the most for shelve space) have good results.
and dischem does not state how the test was conducted and performed.

so for all we know a they could just make up there own estimates.

The amount of protein in the product is't the only problem. It's the quality of the protein.
I would like to see what grade of whey or even what percentage of whey they contain.

Is the University of Pretoria's lab a SANAS approved testing facility?

Ingredients are always listed on the package themselves, so it'll say "Whey concentrate, casein caseinate, soy isolate, bull semen, dextrose". As for percentages is anyone's guess, but the order of ingredients dictates the amount from most to least.

Not sure about the lab. But from info from guys at Tukkies the Prof who did the tests is one of the best in her field in SA. From my understanding this was not only a dischem test, but also a research study done by Tukkies about the industry.

Ja tapatalk does that it seems, even updated to latest version ATM. Works perfectly fine in a PC browser.
