For me the first problem with Aspartame is that I get major headaches from it. According to my doc, there is a shit storm coming the USA about banning aspartame from all products. He is on an all out crusade at the moment warning everyone to stay away from it. He says there are lots of studies and research about it that clearly states it is dangerous. Sorry for dropping the c-bomb but aspartame has been linked to cancer. If you want bro I can ask my doc for those studies for you?

When I started using artificial sweeteners I did research to separate the truth from the scares, a couple of months ago I compared all the non-nutritive sweeteners again - just to make sure nothing new has happened. Now you tell me this... guess I'll have to start reading again to see what changed. Thanks I guess ;) I'll contribute again to this thread when I've formed a new opinion/ can shed new light.

Hahahaha just couldn't resist hey. ;) What about taking a couple of tabs a day for 20+ years? Is it possible that that can also cause cancer? For me the headaches are more than enough reason not to take aspartame. And I NEVER get headaches!

Why no aspartame based sweetners? What would you recommend?

So far...day three of FOF and no side effects at all today. day before yesterday was just a bit of sleeplessness but last night i slept awesome! and today completely fine. In all honesty...I do cardio classes 7 - 9 times a week and toning 2 - 3 times a week...and I eat well (as well as i know) and havent been seeing results fast enough. That's why I started FOF. About three months ago I went on other fat burners on and off for two months and lost 6 kgs in those two months...thats the fastest results i had seen. then stopped the fat burners to give my body a break, and have started up these ones. My body just really takes long to see results, hence the added fat burners experiementing.

Mainly headaches and a lot of other nasty side effects in the long term. Any sweetener that specifically says 'aspartame free' is fine.

too much cardio not enough lifting, u should be lifting weights 4-5x a week and 3-4 cardio sessions a week for your goals.

Sorry for invading your thread Riddin! This topic probably deserves a thread of it's own.

Hey guys, did some follow up research on artificial sweeteners (more aspartame because it’s one I’ve previously found to be the safest and have the least effect on insulin) just to clear things up for myself, and if I can inform other people that’s also cool.

I think the big confusion surrounding aspartame (and probably other sweeteners also) is that studies are done both on animals and humans, and people will get scared from any sign of bad news. This seems to have been the case in earlier studies on animals that show increased risk of blood-related cancers and bladder disease, although this was one in many studies (the rest showed no harmful risk) and lacked data in it’s presentation to stand a case. For humans the danger would’ve been brain cancer and the blood cancers, but more recent studies dismiss this.

FDA says:
Considering results from the large number of studies on aspartame's safety, including five previously conducted negative chronic carcinogenicity studies, a recently reported large epidemiology study with negative associations between the use of aspartame and the occurrence of tumors, and negative findings from a series of three transgenic mouse assays, FDA finds no reason to alter its previous conclusion that aspartame is safe as a general purpose sweetener in food.

EFSA says:
Overall, the Panel concluded, on the basis of all the evidence currently available… that there is no indication of any genotoxic or carcinogenic potential of aspartame and that there is no reason to revise the previously established ADI for aspartame of 40 mg/kg [body weight].

The only other link I can find is Phenylketonuria, where the body cannot break down Phenylalanine, and hinders other chemicals from getting to the brain, by building up in your blood. Phenylalanine is a essential amino and you would've known if you have this condition, so as to limit phenylalanine intake from childhood.

That said, it is still being studied for its safety.

@Pyro: You aren’t the only one to complain of headaches from it – in fact it’s been blamed for numerous other things. It is my opinion that different people react differently to each substance. For instance Sodium Saccharin leaves my mouth numb and bitter. Still interested in exactly what your doc’s opinion is though.

@mike123: Candarel is aspartame and acesulfame-K. Sodium Saccharin is by far the most risky artificial sweetener to use – just be careful and read the ingredients list on the product, lots of them contain more than just one sweetener.
