STEPS TO LIVER DETOXIFICATION
All information in this article is for educational purposes only. It is not for the diagnosis, treatment, prescription or cure of any disease or health condition.
If you can detoxify your liver, in most cases you will improve your health drastically, and you may well save your life if you are very ill. This is a wonderful principle to recall at all times. Nutritional balancing is one of the finest ways to do this, bar none. This article focuses on how this is done using nutritional balancing science.
1. BALANCE THE MAJOR MINERAL LEVELS AND RATIOS ON A PROPERLY PERFORMED HAIR TISSUE MINERAL ANALYSIS. This critical step is needed to drastically improve the cellular energy production throughout the body. This, in turn, assists with liver detoxification along with most other body functions.
2. INGEST MORE SULFUR. The mineral sulfur is needed for the cytochrome P450 detoxification pathways in the liver, and to bind toxic metals, and for other purposes in the liver as well. Most people do not get enough organically bound sulfur in their diets. Therefore, method number one is to increase you intake of sulfur of the correct type.
Two types of sulfur are needed. Non protein-bound sulfur is found in most cooked vegetables. The cabbage family (cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cauliflower) is particularly good. The radish family is also excellent (red radishes, black radishes, white radishes or daikon root, turnip, rutabaga and perhaps a few others). Also, some greens are high in sulfur including watercress, bok choy, Chinese cabbage, kale, mustard greens, collard greens and perhaps a few others, though not spinach. Onions and garlic are also excellent.
Protein-bound sulfur is found in meats and egg yolks, providing one does not cook the egg yolk very much. This is why we recommend soft cooked eggs only so the yolks are runny. Raw eggs may be consumed, but they contain avidin, a minor toxin, and sometimes the eggs contain bacteria that are harmful. Therefore, we suggest soft-boiled eggs cooked for up to about 3 minutes in most areas of the world, or poached eggs or even very lightly fried eggs or very soft scrambled eggs only. Avoid hard-boiled eggs and hard scrambled eggs, as these are much more difficult to digest and the cooking damages the fat and sulfur compounds in the delicate yolk.
3. INGEST MORE OF THE RIGHT TYPE OF SELENIUM. This is also critical for glutathione synthesis in the liver and breakdown of certain toxic compounds in the liver. The correct form of selenium is important. It is found in blue corn, organic yellow corn, but not other corn products. It is also found in sardines and in some meats and other fish. Most fish, however, are too high in mercury to be recommended, so sardines and other very small fish like smelt, anchovies and herring only are best. Of these, the sardine seems to be best.
Other good sources of selenium include chicken meat, breast especially but all of it, turkey meat, mustard of all types, and a few herbs such as curry powder, milk thistle and turmeric. This contains curcumin, a powerful anti-oxidant for the liver. Do not waste money or fill up on selenium supplements or Brazil nuts, as the type of selenium is not as good as the foods above. Save your stomach capacity for the cooked vegetables described above and the foods that contain the proper selenium. Read more about this in the article Selenium on this website.
4. OBTAIN MORE METHYL DONORS. Some people, but not all, need more methyl groups or more methyl attachment agents. Without them, they could die. This is a particularly important topic for all cancer patients, almost all of whom need more methyl groups. This is such an important topic that it is discussed in a separate article entitled Methylation on this website.
5. IMPROVE CIRCULATION, HYDRATION AND OXYGENATION OF THE BODY. These functions are related, and all absolutely needed for liver detoxification. Be sure you breathe deeply at all times, drink 3 quarts and no less daily of spring water or carbon-only filtered water, and to improve circulation some exercise is excellent, and even better is the use of a near infrared sauna on a daily basis. Any sauna will help circulation, however. An ozonator/ionizer air purifier placed in the bedroom will increase the oxygen in your home as well. For more on this topic, read Ozonator/Ionizer Air Purifiers.
A secondary method is the use of castor oil packs. These are not as powerful as some of the other procedures in this article, but they might help. This use of castor oil is an old folk remedy that was promoted by the American psychic, Edgar Cayce. They are simple to do and they will improve circulation and lymph drainage through the liver. Read Detoxification Protocols for instructions how to do them.
6. DO MORE COFFEE ENEMAS. Coffee is a somewhat toxic beverage. However, when introduced through the rectum, the colon seems to filter out many of the toxins, and just allows the nutrients in the coffee to be absorbed. This we know because coffee drinkers become toxic, but those who do coffee enemas, even daily for years, do not become toxic to any appreciable extent.
The colon is actually a remarkable organ that can prevent horrendous toxins that are produced in the intestines from entering the bloodstream, while absorbing water and nutrients from food. So we can use the colon for this purpose. When done this way, the coffee retention enema is one of the most powerful liver detoxification methods of them all. One or even up to three of them daily will move out even the most stubborn of toxins from the liver in a rather painless and inexpensive way. See the article entitled Coffee Enemas for instructions.
7. SIT OR LIE UNDER A RED HEAT LAMP DAILY FOR AT LEAST ONE HOUR. I am not sure why this works, but the frequencies emitted by a standard 250-watt reddish heat lamp are excellent for the liver. They tend to improve circulation, decongest the liver, assist with lymph drainage, and more.
Near infrared lamp sauna therapy. The best way to do this is by using a near infrared lamp sauna daily. This way you will also get the benefits of the heat, sweating, etc. However, if you cannot afford to build a near infrared lamp sauna, then use a single heat lamp aimed at your belly and your back for an hour daily. The heat lamp bulb is sold at most hardware outlets for about $10-15.00 dollars. It must be reddish, not clear.
Combining a coffee retention enema with a red heat lamp on the abdomen is particularly powerful.
8. RUB THE FEET MORE. Foot reflexology is quite amazing, and can be quite beneficial for liver activity. There are three main reflex areas on the feet and hands for the liver. One is on the bottom of the feet, behind the third and fourth toes in the soft part of the bottom of the feet, near the ball of the foot. Another is on the top of the foot, in the web between the big toe and the second toe. This area is often extremely painful to rub. A third area is behind the little toe alone the side of the foot. It is related more to the shoulder, but this is often an area where liver meridian energy is stuck.
9. EXERCISE CARE WITH ALL OF YOUR RELATIONSHIPS AND EMOTIONS. The liver is associated with the emotions, especially anger and fear. If you are spending time in anger or fear, you will damage your liver. If you let these emotions go, through forgiveness, in particular, your liver will heal much faster. This is a secret for detoxifying the liver that most doctor forget. Never hold anger or grudges or resentments against anyone for any reason. Do not let people or situations “get to your liver”. The word livid, and the phrases: I gave him a piece of my liver and He has a lot of gall are common linguistic references to the close connection between the liver and the emotions, particularly anger and rage.
10. MAKE YOUR BODY MORE YANG. This is very critical. The liver is what is called a solid or yin organ in Chinese medicine. When it becomes too yang, in Chinese medicine, it causes problems. Today, however, all the organs tend to be too yin, including the liver. This basically means it is very congested and toxic with metals and toxic chemicals. This is far worse than it ever was when Chinese medicine was set up thousands of years ago. In those times, humans were not plagued with radiation poisoning, toxic chemicals and poor quality food. These are all modern yin problems.
Making the body more yang, along with coffee enemas, supplements, red heat lamp therapy and sauna therapy, all help rid the liver of infections, which often plague it. Most people, for example, have some liver flukes and other parasites that make their home in the liver. However, do not take herbs or drugs to get rid of them, as most of these are toxic and harm the liver. Instead, making the body more yang and a complete nutritional balancing program will slowly rid the liver of all of its infections and this includes parasitic infections. For much more on this topic read Yin Disease and Yin And Yang Healing.
11. IMPROVE THE DIGESTION. The reason for this is that if you do not, then you will generate extremely toxic compounds in the intestines during fermentation and putrefaction of your food. These pass easily into the liver where they poison the liver. This is the case with everyone today, to some degree.
Ways to improve digestion include eating a far better quality diet-without wheat, fruit, fruit juices or any sugars or chemicalized foods.
Also, always take a powerful digestive enzyme with each meal, develop good eating habits such as chewing thoroughly and eating quiet, sit-down meals, not in your car while driving, or sitting at your desk on the telephone. Also, simple food combinations are best, and the very best is to eat only one or two types of food at a single meal. Eat five or six smaller meals if you need to, in order to get all that you need to eat.
12. AVOID THAT WHICH HARMS THE LIVER. This may be one of the most important of all the steps you can take. It means avoiding:
- All medical drugs, all over-the-counter drugs and remedies, all recreational drugs, and especially alcohol in all forms and all types.
- All toxin exposure from the food, water, air and skin contact. This includes all food additives and preservatives, dental amalgams, handling solvents, breathing fumes of all kinds, pesticides, and dozens of other chemicals. It also means reducing your exposure to toxic metals of all kinds in food, water and through contact such as amalgam dental fillings, jewelry and occupational exposure. See the article Toxic Metals for more on how to avoid these powerful poisons.
- Overdosing on herbs, vitamins and minerals. The worst are niacin and iron, both of which are added to all white flour products today. Many so-called health products also contain toxic metals, such as zeolite, azomite, montmorrilinite, fulvic acid, humic acid and most colloidal mineral products from the earth.
- Avoid other toxins. These are found in all large fish, all seaweeds except some kelp, pork and all pig products, all nightshade vegetables (potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant and all peppers), and certain other foods. Unclean food, unwashed raw food and other often contains eggs and larva of parasites, which go to the liver in most cases. Avoid fermented foods that produce aldehydes. These include kombucha tea and most other fermented foods except for yogurt and kefir.
- Copper builds up in the liver and is found in copper intra-uterine devices, foods too high in copper (chocolate, avocado, shellfish, nuts and seeds, and even some organ meats).
- Iron builds up in the liver and is found in most refined white flour products, eating too much red meat (twice a week is fine for most people unless you have cancer, and then do less), iron pills and potions, eating a lot of black or red cherries, molasses and even eating more than about one dozen eggs weekly.
- Avoid all yin foods, supplements, herbs, and other products. This is quite difficult because all fruit is very yin, all sugars are yin, drugs and alcohol are very yin, raw foods are more yin, and most supplements and herbs are quite yin. This is one of the main reasons I limit or eliminate all of these in nutritional balancing science programs.
By doing these things, all of which are part of every nutritional balancing program, you can often quite rapidly, improve the quality of your liver and your health. More about the liver and its problems is found in the article entitled Liver Dysfunctions.
LIVER SYMPTOMS ON A NUTRITIONAL BALANCING PROGRAM
The very rapid liver detoxification that occurs during a complete nutritional balancing program can cause pain in the liver and gall bladder area. Often the entire liver area becomes tender to the touch, and painful, at times.
This pain is fairly common in people on a full program. It is due to an imbalance in the liver meridian, and not in the liver itself. This is very important to know.
The liver meridian is often stuck at the shoulder, as it goes there. People with tight shoulders seem to have this pain the most.
Some people think it is due to gallstones, or inflammation of the liver, and have had ultra-sound tests or even x-rays of the liver. So far, the tests come back normal. Blood tests of the liver come back normal, as well, although on a nutritional balancing program, any time there is an elimination of toxins, it will increase the liver enzymes slightly. This is perfectly normal.
What to do about liver meridian pain. This pain slowly subsides as one continues the program. In other words, the meridians balance themselves out. Acupuncture does not seem to be helpful.
Foot reflexology of the liver area and more so the liver meridian area may be very helpful. This area is between the first and second toe, on the top of each foot. It is in the webbing, and it extends back toward the ankle from the toes. The area will usually be quite tender. Dig your fingertips in there, or even your fingernails, if you can tolerate it. This may help balance out the liver meridian.
More coffee enemas, and the Pushing Down exercise are also often helpful to speed up the release of this area of the body.
Any therapy to loosen up the right shoulder, in particular, is also helpful for this pain. These might include massage or deeper body work.

LIVER DYSFUNCTIONS
All information in this article is for educational purposes only. It is not for the diagnosis, treatment, prescription or cure of any disease or health condition.
The liver is one of the most important organ in the human body, involved in at least 500 body functions. It is also one of the most abused organs today. This article discusses briefly how the liver works, some of the most common liver diseases, and what can be done about them using a nutritional balancing program.
Conditions discussed in this article include general liver toxicity, acute and chronic hepatitis, fatty liver, cirrhosis (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic), gall stones, parasites such as liver flukes, liver inflammation and pain, biliary stasis, and liver cancer.
BASIC LIVER PHYSIOLOGY
The liver contains amazing cells called hepatocytes that perform most of the hundreds of functions of the liver. This is the most important type of liver cell. Other cells have a more supportive role.
Everything that one ingests through the digestive tract first goes to the liver for processing before it is released into the main bloodstream. The job of the liver is to carefully screen or sort through everything one ingests, retaining that which is nutritious and rejecting and hopefully detoxifying and removing all toxins from the food, medications, alcohol and anything else that is ingested.
Today, this is a formidable and almost impossible job to do properly. The food is often of low quality, and often is laced with synthetic additives, such as preservatives, colors, flavors and hundreds of others that have no nutritional value whatsoever. Just understanding this one fact will give a large clue as to why the liver today is under constant assault in most people.
In addition, hundreds of toxins are all around us on items we touch, in the air and water, in our clothing, in the medical drugs and over-the-counter remedies, in the vaccines, and elsewhere. Filtering them all out of our bodies is quite a job.
The liver is able to metabolize or change many toxins so they can be eliminated from the body. Some of them are shunted into the blood stream and then removed by the kidneys. Others move to the bile, which is the secretion of the liver. Bile flows to the gall bladder for storage and perhaps more transformation, and then the bile flows into the small intestine and hopefully the toxins are eliminated in the feces. While this is very brief, it is the basic structure and functional set up of the liver.
WHY THE LIVER MATTERS SO MUCH
The liver performs about 500 functions, at least. Among these are detoxification, protein breakdown and re-synthesis of proteins from amino acids, changing amino aicds into one another, processing of fats, carbohydrates, production of digestive enzymes such as lipases, production of cholesterol, the raw material from which all of the sex hormones and steroid or stress hormones are made, and the list goes on.
The liver is one of the major detoxification organs of the body. It filters everything that comes into the intestines, and it filters the blood as well. This is its unique ability. It does much more than this, but this is a unique ability of the liver and one that no other organ can duplicate.
The way it filters the blood and the material from the intestines is not well understood. However, in an esoteric way it is able to distinguish harmful matter from vital nutrients, hormones, enzymes and other components. Somehow it is able to separate the two. Many toxins are changed by the liver into something less toxic. This is what happens with alcohol, for example.
In many other cases, the harmful drug or substance is simply moved out of the body by being shunted into the bile ducts and removed. Exactly how the liver can distinguish the good from the bad is quite a mystery, and it probably has to do with biochemistry and even the vibrational quality of the substance.
An entire lengthy book could be written about the many functions of the liver.
GENERAL LIVER TOXICITY
General liver toxicity is a good place to begin discussing liver dysfunctions, as general toxicity is universal today. It is also directly related to the cause of all the other liver conditions discussed in this article.
Causes for liver toxicity. Everyone’s liver is quite toxic today due to a combination of the following factors:
1. Eating many food additives on a daily basis.
2. The overuse of medical and over-the-counter drugs. For example, regular use of Tylenol and other OTC drugs is a leading cause of liver disease today.
3. Drinking alcohol.
4. Other dietary toxins such as iron that is added to white bread.
5. Environmental toxins, such as anti-perspirants, dental amalgams, shampoo containing selenium, hair dyes, occupational chemicals, and more.
6. Fermentation and putrefaction of food items in the intestinal tract, which produces alcohol, acetaldehyde, and other toxins.
7. Infections that secrete endotoxins and exotoxins that are quite harmful for the liver.
8. Subtle, but important nutrient deficiencies such as selenium, chromium, zinc, vitamin C and others that are needed for liver detoxification and other liver activities.
9. Widespread constipation, causing toxins to remain in the bowel too long.
Symptoms. One may not experience any obvious symptoms of liver toxicity. However, some people will experience constipation, bad breath, skin problems, upper right quadrant pain, bleeding disorders, other digestive disturbances such as gas, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome and others. Also, many people experience more serious diseases that actually originate in their toxic livers, which can no longer filter out poisons properly or perform their hundreds of other important functions properly.
Identifying general liver toxicity. This is difficult with standard medical tests. Blood serum liver enzyme tests are usually normal. Even a liver biopsy may look normal. Parasite tests may be negative. Testing for toxic chemicals is costly, so it is usually not done unless one has a high suspicion about the presence of a particular toxin.
I use hair mineral testing, which usually reveals the presence of toxic metals that always accumulate in the liver to some degree. In particular, copper, cadmium, mercury and lead always end up in the liver to some degree, at least.
Even most children have a toxic liver, as they were born somewhat toxic and made much worse by vaccines, medical drugs, poor food choices and exposure to other toxins, at times.
Correction. Nutritional balancing science is usually able to easily help people with general liver toxicity. The coffee enema and the near infrared lamp sauna are most helpful, as are the diet and supplements.
Healing on a nutritional balancing program may be slow, at first. The liver is simply incapable of removing many toxins quickly. Later on, as one becomes more healthy, the liver’s ability to process toxic substances improves rather dramatically.
FATTY LIVER - A SLUGGISH AND CONGESTED LIVER
A congested and sluggish liver may not be revealed on most blood or other medical tests. Hair analysis indicators for it usually include a low sodium/potassium ratio (less than about 2), higher toxic metal levels or several poor eliminator patterns, (very low toxic metal readings), low zinc, and perhaps sympathetic dominance.
In addition, a sluggish and congested liver is more common in:
1. Slow oxidizers, rather than fast oxidizers.
2. Adults, rather than children, generally, although today some children are so toxic that there are a few exceptions.
3. More emotional people, as compared to those who are unemotional. This is explained in more detail below.
4. Malnourished people, which is a common situation that affects the liver greatly.
5. Those who use any medical drugs at all, and those who use any recreational drugs at all. They usually have a more toxic and/or more sluggish liver, or will in the future.
Fatty liver will usually respond very well to a complete nutritional balancing program. Two daily coffee enemas, and one or two near infrared lamp sauna sessions daily are most helpful, in addition to the alkaline cooked vegetable diet and the supplements based on a properly performed hair mineral test.
HEPATITIS AND OTHER LIVER INFECTIONS
Hepatitis is extremely common. It is often viral and there are several strains of it that are labeled A, B, C, D, E and perhaps others, today. All or almost all cases of hepatitis involve opportunist organisms. This means that if a person is healthy, one will not become infected, or if infection does occur, it will be mild and transient.
Today, most people, however, are not healthy. As a result, these opportunist strains of viruses and other micro-organisms are difficult to eradicate, at times. Using nutritional balancing science, even stubborn cases of Hepatits C or others usually will resolve quite easily within a year or less. We do not address the hepatitis as much as we address the overall condition of the body, strengthening and balancing the body so that it can remove the infection successfully and completely. Therefore, we do not like using drugs of any kind, or even megadoses of vitamin C or other nutrients, although high-dose vitamin C will often help. The problem is it makes the body more yin, which is not helpful.
PARASITIC INFECTIONS OF THE LIVER
The liver is the site of some parasitic infections. Of these, liver flukes are by far the most common. Many people have these, and they usually do not cause a lot of health problems. I believe testing for them is not worth the effort.
Other parasites that find their way into the liver include some species of amoebas, flagellated one-celled animals, trichina worms, perhaps tapeworms and at times, others. The liver is fairly resistant to parasites, but the bodies today are so toxic, and so out of balance, that parasites and other infections of the liver are common.
In almost all cases a nutritional balancing program will slowly remove all parasites from the liver. This may sound like a wild claim, but it is our day-to-day experience. I will explain how this works.
Parasites thrive, generally, in a toxic body. As the body heals and becomes better nourished and more balanced, substances are secreted by the body that are extremely toxic for all parasites. These include bioavailable copper, even some silver compounds, and many enzymes such as lysozymes that are proteolytic. This means they are capable of digesting proteinaceous material, which includes living organisms that do not belong there.
Our task, therefore, is to build up the body so that it begins to produce these substances in large enough quantity to halt the spread of parasites and slowly reduce their population. This is not as hard to do as it may seem. In fact, within a year or two of starting a nutritional balancing program, often the level of the parasites is significantly reduced.
In a few cases, other specific remedies may be needed to reduce the load of parasites. The problem with these is that if the body is not strong and balanced, and if we miss just a few parasites, they reproduce prolifically and will come back quickly. Also, most parasite remedies are somewhat toxic themselves, such as herbal remedies or drugs. This is not helpful for overall health, and in fact slows the general detoxification of the body. So for this reason, we rarely start with parasite remedies. Instead, we always start with a program for healing the entire body. As this occurs, usually the parasite problem diminishes and eventually vanishes.
EMOTIONS, LIFESTYLE AND THE LIVER
Certain emotions, notably anger, irritate the liver. This has been known for many years. In fact, in Shakespeare’s day, the liver was believed to be the seat of the emotions. This is largely true, in one sense. The liver is where certain minerals such as copper and iron are stored. Also, the liver is an entry point for etheric energy and when blocked, it leads to emotional outbursts. This is a bit complex. However, the liver is an important area for mental or spiritual development, as it is a site, one of several, in which a more advanced energy called etheric energy can enter the human body. When there is too much anger, this does not happen. This will cut short a life for this reason. This is why many wise people have advised that one should let go of anger at any cost to preserve life.
The influence of the liver on emotions is reflected, in fact, in common language, in expressions such as “She has a lot of gall”, or “He gave her a piece of his liver”, meaning he blew up in anger at her.
As the toxic metals are released from the liver, however, often if begins to function better and the emotions become calmer. Women often have a more toxic liver than some men because women have difficulty with anger more so than men. This may have to do with their higher copper levels, higher estrogen levels and other factors.
IRRITATION DUE TO A NUTRITIONAL BALANCING PROGRAM
We find that during a nutritional balancing program, at times the liver will become overloaded with toxins that are being released from storage sites throughout the body. This is akin to overloading a toilet, which causes it to back up. This will occasionally cause slightly elevated liver enzymes, for example, or some pain in the lower right side of the abdomen as the liver struggles to remove the toxins quickly enough.
In most cases, this will pass quickly. If it does not, we always suggest reducing the supplement program for a day or two, drinking more water and perhaps drinking distilled water for a few days, or taking an extra coffee enema, perhaps as well. In all cases, this type of liver irritation is benign and nothing to worry about. As the liver heals and becomes more able to remove toxins of all kinds, such symptoms tend to diminish.
SUGGESTIONS FOR ANYONE WITH LIVER DISEASE
Following a complete nutritional balancing program is the best option. However, one can begin immediately with the following “generic” suggestions. In some cases, they will be sufficient to resolve the problem without needing a full nutritional balancing program. I prefer a complete program because it will address other issues and it will promote mental development as well as resolve almost all liver conditions. Here are the generic suggestions:
1. Reduce the load of toxins that the liver must cope with on a daily basis by avoiding all processed foods, all food additives, alcohol and caffeine.
2. Learn how to substitute natural products for all over-the-counter and prescription drugs for common ailments such as allergies, colds, flu, infections, and all other health conditions as much as possible.
3. Use a powerful digestive aid every time you eat. I recommend GB-3 by Endomet Laboratories in Phoenix, Arizona. It contains a lot of ox bile, pancreatin, bile salts and Russian black radish. Taking a digestive aid of this type will not only increase bile flow. It will also reduce fermentation and putrefaction of food in the intestines. These two highly toxic processes release enormous quantities of toxic chemicals into the intestine that are absorbed into the liver in many people.
4. Improve your eating habits. This means do not drink much water with meals, eat slowly, chew thoroughly and do not overeat. Also, avoid eating when anxious, and keep meals very simple – one, two or three foods per meal only. These simple rules will also reduce harmful fermentation and putrefaction of your food.
5. Drink 3 quarts of water each day for adults. Drink only spring water or distilled water for a few months only. Avoid reverse osmosis water, alkaline waters and other types of water.
6. Follow the basic dietary suggestion for slow oxidizers discussed in The Slow Oxidizer Eating Plan. Especially eat cooked vegetables twice daily or more, filling at least half your plate with cooked vegetables.
7. Consider doing a coffee enema daily, and taking our basic supplement program, at the very least. This includes kelp capsules (3 daily), omega-3 fatty acids (1000 mg daily), vitamin D (5000 iu daily), and a product called Paramin from Endomet Labs that contains 250 mg calcium and 150 mg magnesium in each tablet (3 daily or more).
If this is not enough, then consider a complete nutritional balancing program, which will include having a hair mineral analysis to assess your metabolic type and rate, and many other parameters of the body chemistry. Then more specific supplementation, more specific dietary suggestions and other procedures can be suggested to enhance the simple measures above. In this way, most liver conditions can be overcome easily.

METHYLATION
Methylation is one of the body’s most important and most common chemical processes. It is the addition of a methyl group, or CH3, to many chemical compounds to change their solubility, or for other reasons that are explained below.
To assist methylation, a supplement of TMG or trimethylglycine is now part of every nutritional balancing program. This was not part of Dr. Paul Eck’s original research. TMG supplements were added to the program in early 2013.
A SAMPLING OF METHYLATION PROCESSES
Methylation processes occur in hundreds of essential chemical reactions in our bodies. To give you an idea of their importance, here is a small sampling of them:
1. Use in genetics. Methylation is key for making all the chemicals in our bodies. Here is how it is involved:
A. It is used to stop certain viruses that can damage the DNA.
B. It helps grow the chemicals.
C. It stops the production of trophoblast. This has to do with cancer.
D. It suppresses replication of DNA in areas where the body does not want it replicated.
E. Extremely important for neurological chemicals.
F. Extremely important for formation of some chemicals in the blood.
G. It inactivates replication of the X chromosome, which is very important.
H. It is used to cause a genetic trait to come from only one parent, and not both.
I. It prevents some genetic diseases.
J. It helps protect the tags or telomeres on the genes.
2. Detoxification. Methylation is a primary method of removing toxins in the phase 2 liver detoxification system of the body. More precisely, methylation converts toxins of all kinds from insoluble, less soluble or fat-soluble compounds into water-soluble compounds. This, in turn, allows the body to eliminate them more easily.
Methylation, in this sense, is somewhat like first tagging toxic substances and then altering them in a way that allows the body to identify them as toxins, and then to eliminate them rapidly and simply. Larger molecules are then able to be eliminated through the bile, while smaller ones pass into the bloodstream and are removed by the kidneys in the urine.
3. Neurotransmitter synthesis and utilization. Methylation is part of the synthesis of dopamine and serotonin. This is one reason why taking trimethylglycine or TMG can help a person relax. However, relaxation may also occur because TMG assists with liver detoxification.
4. Folate metabolism and cardiovascular health. Methylation is involved in converting homocysteine, which is a dangerous amino acid when in excess, back into methionine, an essential amino acid. This, in turn, is converted to other amino acids in various biochemical pathways.
About 50% of the earth population appear to have genetic variants of the MTHFR enzyme causing them to have some difficulty resynthesizing methionine from homocysteine. This can be a factor in cardiovascular disease, mental illness such as depression, and perhaps other health conditions such as fatigue and exhaustion.
While doctors may tell you the problem is “genetic” and therefore incurable, our evidence is that it is not incurable. The problem with the RNA can be due to toxic metals such as copper and mercury, that somehow interfere with genetic transcription, or the “writing” of the RNA from the DNA. For much more on this subject, please read MTHFR Defects on this website. In other words, the problem is not due to defective DNA, which would be hard to change. It is due to zinc deficiency and other problems involved in the copying of the DNA. For more on genetics, read Genetic Defects And Nutritional Balancing on this site.
5. Hormonal regulation. By assisting the liver and for other reasons, methylation is involved in balancing hormones, such as restoring the proper balance of estrogens, for example. This helps reduce the tendency for cancer and for many other health conditions related to a hormone imbalance.
6. Reduces inflammation. This occurs for many reasons. Among them are toxin removal, hormone balancing, neurotransmitter synthesis, and others.
7. Helps protect the mitochondria. By protecting the mitochondria, methylation helps adaptive energy production greatly. Without adequate methylation, one becomes very tired.
8. Restores the level of SAMe in the spinal fluid and elsewhere. SAMe or S-adensylmethionine is a common chemical found in the body. It functions as a methyl donor once it has been restored to functioning by the action of methyl groups. It can be given as a supplement to prevent depression, and it has other mental and physical effects on the body. It is quite costly, so we do not use it and instead we use other methyl donors such as trimethylglycine or TMG, folate, methionine, cysteine, taurine and others.
9. Required to make coenzyme Q10. This vital substance is needed for heart health and for energy production within the mitochondria.
10. Tends to increase muscle mass. This can be important in wasting diseases such as cancer, and for general health. This aspect of protein synthesis aided by extra methylation is widely known in the livestock industry. Methylating agents are added to some animal feeds.
11. Other. Methylation reactions are very common in the body and involved in most body functions, to some degree. This is why compromised methylation can cause or contribute to almost all health conditions. Most people today have inadequate methylation, and this is why we supplement with TMG.
METHYLATION BIOCHEMISTRY
To facilitate the attachment of a methyl group to a toxin or other molecule, methyl groups or CH3 can take the form of an anion with 7 or 8 free electrons, or a cation with 6 free electrons. The words anion and cation have to do with the electrical charge of the molecule and nothing more. The correct electrical charge is required for the methyl group to attach to a variety of toxins and other molecules in the body.
EVERYONE NEEDS MORE METHYL GROUPS
Most everyone, in our experience, does not have enough methyl groups. This is the case even if a person is healthy, and even if a person eats a very healthful diet. This may be due to some type of pollution that interferes with the body’s production of methyl groups.
It might also be due to a toxin or stress that everyone is exposed to today that increases the body’s need for methyl groups. This is a current subject of research in nutritional balancing science.
OVERMETHYLATION?
Dr. Eck and other researchers believe that some people are overmethylated – that is, they have too many methyl groups. This does not seem to be the case, however, in my experience, or it is extremely rare. I have only seen this, so far, if a person takes too much trimethylglycine as a supplement.
Confusion of terminology. Carl Pfeiffer, MD, PhD used the term undermethylated to describe some psychotic patients who are also described as histadelic or having high histamine levels and with low serum copper. Among their primary symptoms are delusions, phobias, an obsessive-compulsive tendency and an adverse reaction to taking B-complex vitamins.
Overmethylated in Dr. Pfeiffer’s understanding is associated with histapenia, or low histamine and copper overload. Among their symptoms are depression, low libido, panic disorder, onset after giving birth, dry eyes and mouth. As mentioned above, however, I do not find that people with elevated copper or low histamine levels (slow oxidizers) are overmethylated.
SOURCES OF METHYL GROUPS
1. Endogenous production. A healthy body makes many methyl groups.
2. Natural foods. Methyl groups are also found in natural foods, especially quinoa, spinach, lamb, chicken, and beets. Cooking may damage them a little, but the diet is a good source if one eats plenty of dark green cooked vegetables, for example. Fewer are absorbed from raw foods, so salads are not a good source.
Processed foods and vegetarian foods are very poor sources of methyl groups. Please strictly avoid vegetarian diets if you want to obtain enough methyl groups.
3. Supplements. To supplement methyl groups, we use TMG or trimethylglycine. Women can take up to 1 gram daily of TMG. Men can take up to 3 grams daily.
FACTORS THAT CAN INTERFERE WITH METHYLATION
The following may affect methyl group formation:
1. A diet low in cooked vegetables. Cooked vegetables provide most of the dietary methyl groups.
2. Sugars in the diet. Especially today, sugars in any form at all appear to be harmful for proper methylation. I am not sure of the reasons for this, but this is one reason I advise against eating any simple carbohydrates or sugars, including fruits and fruit juices, and all products made with these.
3. Some fermented foods. Fermented foods are a problem today for several reasons:
A. Some of them contain toxins called aldehydes. These form during the production of the food item. Aldehydes are quite toxic for the liver. Examples of food items that contain aldehydes are kombucha tea, kimchi, and most fermented grains. Please avoid all these products for best health, no matter what other benefits they may offer.
B. All fermented foods are also yin in macrobiotic terminology for at least two reasons: 1) they are basically raw foods, and 2) they contain ferments, which are bacteria or yeasts that tend to be more yin food components.
For both of the reasons above, eating a lot of fermented foods may increase the need for methyl groups in our bodies.
Fermented foods that are safe to eat in moderation include yogurt, kefir, miso and most good quality cheeses. These do not contain as many aldehydes, so they are safe to eat.
Do not fill up on fermented foods. Some health authorities strongly recommend eating loads of fermented foods due to some health benefits. I do not agree with this due to the problems listed above. Fermented foods, especially kombucha tea, can provide an energy boost, or “high”, so people think they are healthful when they are not. Kombucha tea appears to contain an amphetamine-like substance that can be addictive. For more on this topic, please read Kombucha Tea, Aldehydes and Fermented Foods.
4. Too much animal protein in the diet. Too much methionine in some diets may negatively affect methylation.
5. Inflammation and infections in the body. Fighting off these threats to life uses up more methyl groups.
6. Heavy metal toxicity, especially copper and mercury. These may interfere with methyl group formation.
7. Use of high-dose niacin or niacinamide. This reduces methyl groups because the body uses up methyl groups in order to detoxify and excrete niacin through the liver. A dose below about 50 mg per day, however, should not be a problem.
8. Liver toxins. Anything that is ingested, inhaled or comes into contact with the body that is toxic for the liver will be harmful for the formation of methyl donors. Also, liver detoxification pathways require methyl groups, so exposure to liver toxins may use up more methyl groups.
9. Advancing age. Production seems to decrease with age.
10. Male gender. According to Paul Frankel, PhD and Fred Madsen, PhD, authors of Stop Homocysteine Through The Methylation Process (1998), women of child-bearing age have the best methylation, better than that of men.
METHYLATION AND CANCER
Cancer toxins appear to increase the need for methylating agents such as TMG. A common reason people die with cancer is they cannot eliminate their toxic metals and toxic chemicals due to impaired methylation in the liver. As a result, toxins accumulate until death occurs. I originally learned about the use of supplementary TMG from a cancer specialist.
HAIR ANALYSIS INDICATORS FOR A NEED FOR METHYL DONORS
This is a research area at this time. Most everyone seems to need extra methyl groups. Even more may be needed if a hair mineral test reveals:
1. Poor eliminators on an initial hair mineral analysis. This indicates difficulty eliminating toxic metals. Note that poor eliminator patterns that appear only on a retest do not indicate a need for methyl groups, and this phenomenon has a completely different meaning. For more on this interesting topic, please read Poor Eliminator Patterns on this website.
2. A zinc level greater than about 20 mg% on an initial hair mineral test. This is an indicator for the presence of hidden copper and perhaps other hidden toxic metals.
3. A four lows pattern, especially on an initial mineral analysis. This is a definite indicator of impaired methylation and a greater need for methyl groups.
4. A very slow oxidation rate. This is always associated with copper toxicity, and often toxicity with other heavy metals.
5. Elevated mercury, which is almost universal today.
6. Elevated copper, and perhaps high levels of the other toxic metals.
All of these indicate hidden or deeply stored toxic metals.
ADVANCED HELP, MAGNESIUM AND METHYLATION
Rarely, during a nutritional balancing program, the hair magnesium level increases 50% or more on a retest analysis. This pattern is called receiving help. For more about it, please read the article entitled Interventions on this website.
When it occurs, the production of methyl groups increases. This is wonderful, in all cases. In part, at least, it is due to the replacement of an inferior magnesium compound in the body with a more biologically active form of magnesium. The increase in the hair tissue magnesium is evidence of the elimination of the more toxic form of magnesium. This is an interesting observation that seems to be born out consistently in practice.
Potassium and methylation. Potassium can also increase rapidly on a retest hair analysis. This is often caused by the elimination of a lower quality potassium compound (potassium chelate or potassium chloride in many cases) as the body heals. Poor quality potassium finds it ways into our bodies from:
1) Toxic N-P-K or superphosphate fertilizers. These are used on ALL of our foods today, even organic foods. Fruits, in particular, take up the toxic potassium from the soil. This is one of the main reasons I do not recommend eating fruit or fruit juices of any kind, no matter how nutritious they may seem. Please read Superphosphate Fertilizers for more on this topic.
2) Toxic potassium also concentrates in male seminal fluid or semen, female sexual fluids, and amniotic fluid (the fluid that babies lay in within their mothers’ wombs). Babies are thus born with more of this toxic potassium in their bodies, which they may be able to eliminate within the first two years of life if they follow a nutritional balancing program. Otherwise, it often remains inside the body for years. Homosexuals often have more of it, as well, that shows up on hair mineral tests. For more on this topic, please read Toxic Potassium on this site.
The elimination of lower-quality magnesium and lower-quality potassium both seem to cause an increase in methyl group production in the body, although more research about this is needed.
A COMPLETE NUTRITIONAL BALANCING PROGRAM IS BEST TO ASSIST METHYLATION

TRIMETHYLGLYCINE OR TMG
All information in this article is for educational purposes only. It is not for the diagnosis, treatment, prescription or cure of any disease or health condition.
Trimethylglycine or TMG is a recent and amazing addition to all nutritional balancing supplement programs. I have been using it since January 2013. TMG is a vitamin-like substance. It functions as an anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, energy booster, methyl donor and more.
TMG is also called betaine because it was first isolated from sugar beets. It is not the same as betaine hydrochloride, however. I now add it to most all nutritional balancing programs. The dosage is up to 1000 mg daily for women and up to 3000 mg daily for men. Children need less, depending on their size.
Most people seem to need it and benefit greatly from it. It does not seem to interfere with the rest of a nutritional balancing program, which is very unusual, provided one does not take too much.
SOURCES OF TMG
Sources are:
1. Plenty of TMG is made in a healthy body.
2. Some can also be obtained from the diet.
3. One can take it as a food supplement that is available in many health food stores.
Not enough made by the body. Many people do not make enough TMG today. The reason appears to be the presence of certain toxic metals. In addition, stress, infections, inflammation and other disease conditions may use up what the body makes, so more is needed.
Mercury toxicity. Mercury is just one poison that either interferes with TMG production in the body, or increases the body’s need for this amazing chemical.
The problem of mercury toxicity is so widespread that I laugh when people want to be tested for mercury poisoning. I tell them everyone is mercury toxic today because mercury is so widely distributed in the environment. Some are more toxic than others with mercury, but we are all subject to it. If you eat any fish or seafood, toxicity will be much worse. If you have silver/mercury dental amalgams, you will also likely have more of it. Mercury can contribute to hundreds of health conditions. For more on mercury, read Mercury Toxicity on this site.
Copper toxicity. Copper toxicity may also interfere with TMG. Most people today are toxic with certain forms of copper, regardless of what blood, urine or other tests reveal. In fact, these tests are very unreliable to assess the copper balance, and most people’s bodies contain some toxic forms of copper such as amigo copper.
One cause of the copper toxicity is widespread zinc deficiencies in the soil and in our food. This tends to cause more accumulation of copper in the body. Women tend to be more copper toxic than men, although it affects both men and women.
Copper imbalance is responsible for most headaches, female organ problems, mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and panic attacks, skin conditions and more. For more on copper, read Copper Toxicity Syndrome on this website.
Dietary sources of TMG. The main foods high in TMG are broccoli, beets and other vegetables. These foods are naturally high in TMG and in folate, which are both methyl donors. The problem is that most people do not eat nearly enough of these foods to get a sufficient amount of TMG from their diet. Also, even if one eats plenty of these vegetables, it is not nearly enough. So I suggest supplementing it, as well.
Supplements. Supplementary TMG appears to be very helpful due to 1) low production inside the body, 2) a greater need for TMG today, and 3) inadequate dietary intake of TMG. See below for dosages, and cautions with supplementary TMG.
THE BASIC STRUCTURE OF TMG
TMG consists of three methyl groups (CH3) joined to one molecule of the amino acid glycine. This is a very important type of structure because, when eaten in food or taken orally as a supplement, TMG easily lets go of two or even three of its methyl groups.
Letting go of one methyl group leaves a substance called dimethylglycine or DMG. Letting go of three methyl groups frees up a molecule of the amino acid glycine. These are discussed below.
Dimethylglycine. When TMG gives up a methyl group, it leaves a compound called dimethylglycine. Dimethylglycine is considered a B-complex vitamin and has been shown to assist with speech and behavior in autistic children and adults, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), to improve neurological function, and to reduce seizure activity. It can help one handle stress, improves oxygen utilization, enhances liver activity and helps optimize athletic performance.
DMG also has anti-inflammatory and anti-aging effects. Dimethylglycine is used to improve the immune response, to shrink tumors, and to enhance anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-tumor defenses. It has also been shown to benefit chronic fatigue syndrome, allergies, respiratory disorders, alcoholism, and drug addiction.
In addition, it appears to help reduce serum cholesterol and triglycerides, and to help normalize blood pressure and blood glucose. In short, it is quite amazing.
Note, however, that dimethylglycine is not used as a supplement in nutritional balancing, as it is very yin in Chinese medical terms, which is harmful for a nutritional balancing program. Also, it is not as good as TMG, which has all the benefits of DMG, and more.
Glycine. Glycine is the smallest of the amino acids. This is important in subtle ways. It is very important in the formation of collagen, among other functions. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and used for connective tissue such as tendons, ligaments, cartilage, arteries, veins, and most other similar structures.
Glycine, in larger doses of up to 3000 mg daily, has been found helpful for sleep and alertness. I do not use such large doses, but it could be tried if nothing else works. Perhaps this is why TMG helps some people rest.
FUNCTIONS OF TMG
TMG is useful for the body as a methyl donor. In addition, it has other uses when broken down into DMG and glycine, or transformed into SAMe or other compounds such as methionine. Let us discuss a few of these.
A powerful and safe methyl donor. TMG easily donates three methyl groups to the body. Methyl groups (CH3) are required in millions of biochemical reactions in human and animal bodies. Here are just a few of the best studied examples:
1. Lowering homocysteine. Homocysteine is an amino acid that, in excess, is irritating to the arteries and is strongly associated with inflammation and hardening of the arteries. In fact, the level of homocysteine correlates much better with heart disease than the level of cholesterol.
Doctors are beginning to realize this important link. High homocysteine occurs when there is not enough TMG or folic acid to donate enough methyl groups. There can be other causes, but this is the major cause. As explained earlier, a deeper cause for this is the presence of mercury and copper toxicity, which are almost universal. However, the problem can be solved with a diet high in TMG and folate, or a TMG or folate supplement. One does not need both in most cases.
High homocysteine, however, causes many other problems. It causes a deficiency of methionine, and this, in turn, can cause a deficiency of SAMe, causing depression in some people. Methionine is also needed for other biochemical reactions involving protein synthesis, another critical body function. In fact, reducing excessive homocysteine helps with conditions ranging from osteoporosis and birth defects to cancer and aging. It also helps with antioxidant protection, as well.
2. Helping with liver detoxification. Methyl groups are absolutely essential for the Phase 2, P450 liver detoxification pathway. Within this critical biochemical sequence of events, fat-soluble or otherwise poorly soluble toxins that are difficult for the liver to remove are joined to a methyl group, and this helps prepare them for removal from the body. This is an amazing and vital chemical detoxification ability. In MOST people, it does not work well due living in a very toxic world.
Specifically, the methylation reactions enables toxins to become much more soluble in water. This allows the body to remove the toxins much better, and it often neutralizes some of their toxic properties, as well. These toxins include all of the toxic metals in many forms and compounds, as well as hundreds of toxic chemicals. Much more could be written about this amazing system and how critical it is today for our health. This is one of the main benefits of TMG supplementation, I believe.
3. Alleviating depression. TMG increases the body’s natural production of SAMe or S-adenosyl methionine. This chemical can help reduce depression, in some cases. SAMe is an expensive supplement, and a more yin supplement, which is not good. It appears to be far better to just take TMG.
4. Reducing the chances of diabetes. Methyl groups are involved in insulin release and insulin activity. When the body does not have enough active methyl groups, diabetes is much more likely to arise.
5. Avoiding genetic problems. Methyl groups are needed for protein synthesis, also called biosynthesis. This is the copying of our genetic code from the DNA to RNA, and then from there the synthesis or formation of every chemical in our bodies. The copying of the DNA is also called genetic transcription.
Without enough TMG, biosynthesis can slow down, telomeres can shorten, and genetic errors, also called transcription errors, multiply, and health is definitely worse.
OTHER TMG BENEFITS
TMG has an overall parasympathetic effect. TMG seems to help restore balance to the autonomic nervous system, especially in those who are following a complete nutritional balancing program. This may be one of its most important benefits.
Hair mineral analyses reveal that about half the population has an autonomic nervous system imbalance that I call sympathetic dominance. It means their sympathetic or fight-or-flight nervous system is “on” too much of the time. This is very damaging for anyone’s health. A supplement of TMG can help reverse this imbalance, and thus contribute greatly to healing. For more on this important topic, read Sympathetic Dominance on this website.
Note: Other doctors use the words sympathetic dominance differently, usually to mean a sympathetic state of body chemistry. This is very different and has nothing to do with sympathetic dominance, as the word is used on this website.
TMG good for those with an MTHFR defect. Over 50% of the world’s population today has a mild to severe copying error in their cells that reduces the biosynthesis of folate in their bodies. This is mistakenly called a “genetic defect”, when it is no such thing. It is a transcription error or polymorphism or abnormal gene expression. This is an error in copying the DNA code, and not a problem with the DNA code itself. For more on this, read MTHFR Defects, Genetic Defects and Genetic Testing on this website.
Anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. These appear to be true, although I have not seen much medical literature about them. Perhaps more studies will be done on this in the future.
Profound effects on the brain, digestion and other body systems. TMG seems to affect many body systems, probably because methylation reactions are vital throughout the body.
What is most clear from our research, so far, is that it is a wonderful addition to a nutritional balancing program. Dr. Paul Eck, my teacher, would be thrilled with this product.
He always sought to continuously improve nutritional balancing programs to meet the needs of the day, which today means the ability to detoxify hundreds of toxins, about which we sometimes know very little.
DOSAGE OF TMG
For adults. TMG comes in tablets or capsules of 500, 750 and 1000 mg. Endomet Labs does not sell TMG at this time, but it is widely available in health food stores and on the internet. Do not take DMG or dimethylglycine. Only take trimethylglycine or TMG.
All brands in the stores seem to work well. A few people have complained that the NOW brand of TMG picks up moisture and the pills fall apart. This would only occur in a damp climate. However, it still works.
Dosage. Figuring out how much TMG to supplement has not been easy. Hair analysis has not been a reliable guide, nor have other standard tests.
Recently, we found that women should take only 1000 mg daily. Men can take up to 3000 mg daily. If the sodium/potassium ratio is less than about 0.4 mg%, a little more TMG is often helpful.
If one takes too much, usually one does not feel well. Symptoms of too much TMG include some fatigue, nausea, hair loss, dizziness, spaciness or rarely other symptoms. Too much also causes the body to become yin, which is not helpful. This is hard to detect, however.
Giving TMG to babies and children. Children need proportionately less TMG than adults, depending on their size and weight. Babies usually do not need it. Older children often need about 250-500 mg daily.
TMG is available in a liquid and powder or crystals, and this may be easier to give to children. TMG tastes sweet, so it may be possible to just add it to children’s food.
DOSAGE DURING SOME HEALING REACTIONS
TMG during some retracing reactions. In many instances, taking extra TMG is wonderful to reduce healing reactions and retracing symptoms. If you are having a healing reaction or purification reaction, you may try taking more TMG, as it can help, in some cases. However, do not keep taking more than 1000 mg for women and up to 3000 mg for men for more than a week or so, as it is somewhat yin.

CAUTIONS WITH TMG
Most people report no side effects at all from taking TMG. Most just feel better. Often they report a little better sleep and perhaps a little more energy, when starting. However, there are several cautions:
1. Yin. TMG is a water-soluble substance similar to some B-complex vitamins, most of which tend to be quite yin. This is important because in nutritional balancing science one must avoid most supplements, including especially those that are quite yin. This is the reason to limit TMG intake, as explained earlier in this article.
The reason for avoiding yin foods, yin supplements, and yin procedures, yin lifestyles and yin thinking is that the bodies are already much too yin, and balancing the physics qualities of yin and yang is amazingly helpful for healing the body, mind and soul. For more on this CRITICAL TOPIC, please read Yin and Yang Healing and Yin Disease on this site.
2. A few people do not tolerate TMG well. They may just not need very much of it. However, our research indicates that, in some cases, the problem is that it brings up psychological issues or it detoxifies them too quickly.
In particular, men or women who have deep-seated resentments and perhaps some ambivalence about men seem to have more trouble taking TMG. It appears that TMG activates an enzyme system that is dormant or less active in those with male resentment issues. Taking TMG, for these people, can cause rather severe symptoms or anger, fear, depression or anxiety.
If this occurs, just reduce the dosage to a comfortable dose. The symptoms promptly go away when one reduces or stops the TMG. However, if one can tolerate the symptoms, one may move through the retracing of relationship issues much faster, so take what you can.
3. Other research reports. These suggest that too much TMG can cause diarrhea and nausea, and may adversely affect the cholesterol level. So far, TMG seems very safe for pregnancy in the doses I suggest.
HOW LONG SHOULD ONE TAKE TMG?
So far, all our clients need to continue taking TMG for several years, at least. This is a subject of research.
IS OVERMETHYLATION A PROBLEM IF ONE TAKES TMG?
A few health authors believe that some people are overmethylated. However, we have not found this to be true, provided that women do not take more than 1000 mg of TMG daily and men do not take over 3000 mg daily. One must also follow the rest of a nutritional balancing diet and healing program.
IF TMG IS SO HELPFUL, WHY IS IT NOT USED MORE OFTEN?
TMG is used by the ton in the poultry and other livestock industries. There it is used as a food additive to help reduce the fat content of the livestock meat, improve the muscle meat, and regulate the amount of feed necessary to produce the best meat.
TMG is not a popular supplement for human beings for several possible reasons:
1. Methylation is somewhat complex. Most medical doctors, holistic doctors, nutritionists and naturopaths do not understand it well. For example, some doctors believe that a portion of the population is already overmethylated, and that more methyl groups are harmful. However, I have not observed this.
2. To lower homocysteine, most doctors suggest a combination of supplementary vitamin B6, B12 and folic acid rather than TMG, even though TMG may work better and is recommended for inherited homocysteinuria. The reason for using B6, B12 and folic acid instead of TMG is that B6 and B12 help move the methyl groups around in certain ways and B6 offers an alternative pathway for the conversion of homocysteine to methionine. I am not sure, at this time, which is best, but both methods work, to the best of my knowledge.
3. Perhaps TMG helps those who are on a nutritional balancing program more than it helps the general population. Our clients report great benefits, but I have not heard this from those who are not on a nutritional balancing program. I do not know why this would occur, but it may be that TMG works best in combination with the other aspects of a complete nutritional balancing program, for some reason.
4. TMG is not as well known by many in the nutrition professions. This article is designed to help demystify it.
