This is common foklore among bodybuilders and nutriotionists. Like they said salt does increase water retention but the fact is that water retention is good for the body and good for gains. Water retention increases nutrient uptake and basically makes everything run more effectively. Think about why creatine is so damn awesome when all it really does is force the muscles to retain more water. Theoretically it will also increase energy expenditure because you are doing the same exercises but with more resistance and effort because you weigh more. If you are going for a photo shoot or step on stage then you don´t want the water retention. Most of the water from salt is retained in the fat and not in the muscles. I had to include that last sentence before the Pedant Police arrive.

Fascinating post Pyro. Thank you.
So for the average joe like myself who is not about to hit the stage, salt is not that big a deal then? Wow

Today I will do what I never thought possible!

He also mentioned that excess salt will cause even more water retention?

It comes down to salt balances. The modern human diet is generally too rich in sodium chloride (regular table salt), resulting in high sodium intake, while often neglecting potassium. That’s what the sodium scare is on about, sodium itself isn't bad – but we get it so easily that we get too much. Balancing the two is important (thus just lowering general sodium use will be beneficial for most), but stay hydrated (especially hard water) and water retention should be less of a bother.
