Course for Cyclists was created by Yoda
Good day gents,

I have done quite a few courses over the years and know a little bit about gear.
My cousin who is just out of school has been asking me what gear he could take to boost his performances in his on road cycling.
He is very serious about his performances and wants to take it further as he is doing so well provincially etc.

As we all know, no one in that sport at the top is all natural.
Now from what I know about gear in general is that it is not great for your cardio and heart. This is why I don't want to give him any advice on what he could take to improve a bit.

I need to turn to the more knowledgeable for advice on this topic.

Any suggestions or help will be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

Coming out of school, he is simply too young for gear my bro.
His body is still developing. Gear at this point will only cause unnecessary harm in the long term.
No sport is worth messing up your natural development.
Hope this helps!

I doubt you'll find anyone here willing to advise teen cyclists on steroid use. He doesn't need to use anything illegal. At his age he still needs to learn what it means to train hard and find out his natural capabilities are. Using steroids now would mess that up.

Cycling, esp. road, is all about power to weight ratio.
Steriods will potentially add weight and his performance will drop!

Best he learn to train to optimise his power output via maximum muscle fibre recruitment via optimum nervous coordination.

This is like power lifting.

Don't go to gym and do 20 reps - he gets plenty reps on the bike.
Google the new studies on weight training for max power for cyclists.

Also get his nutrition right.

It will be the best start you could give him.
