I've heard the Virgin Active body fat machines are not very accurate, but they do seem to give consistent results.

Who knows their correct body fat and how far off are your results when you use the virgin machines?

For example, if you know you're 10% and the virgin machine give you 15%, you know to just subtract 5%.

those are very inaccurate.

taking mesures with calipers on the body is the most acurate!

I know they are inaccurate, but like i said, i do find them to be consistent.

So does anybody that use calipers, know how far off these machines are ?

If you don't have callipers ask one of the Biokenetic's people at the gym to measure u. They dont normally mind and most of them have callipers.

Those machines are useless!

In one day it said my BF was 18% / 23% / 20 / 17% ???????????

All one after each other..

I found their scales to be wrong at times .

Never fraternize with them as equals, never accept them as your social equals or they will devour you, they will destroy you.

When I first started working out I measured myself and it told me I was at about 18%, about a week later it told me I was at 2%.........so yeah that was the last time I used it.

If you want a accurate measurement you will have to go 2 a univ or hospital of some sort and get it measured in a hidrostatic pool. This way of measuring is incredibly expensive and time consuming and the ice water you have 2 lay in b4 the test doesn't help much either. Don't expect a result over 20% though!

This thread has gone off on a tangent. I'm not asking which is the most accurate method to measure bodyfat.

I'm asking roughly how far off are the Virgin Active machines (+/-%)(from someone who knows their true bodyfat) ?

These machines are calibrated so every 1 of them will differ. Thats why I told you to get ur bodyfat with a calliper from the gym biokenetic and then check that against the machine. I do not say that it is a exact science but do think it will be ur best bet. Hope it helps

Thanks. Let me know.

I've found it best to take an average with them over three different days as their consistency varies in my experience by about 2%. When i put on weight i was always between 20-22% and when i slimmed down i was always between 10-12%.

another thing guys, when you use the machine before gym its better as the moment you get a workout and the muscles has some blood running in them the reading goes up way more coz of the pump thats going...

it measures ur bmi i think

ya its a very shitty machine, and expensive.
if any person would measure him at that machine, and then measure him with a bio,or calipars he would get a total diffrent reading.

hi,

the electronic scales and similiar equipment found in gyms are not at all accurate. Research has shown there to be upto 70% out. they send a harmless electronic current through your body. As current flows quicker through fatty mass than it does through other tissues like bone or muscle, the machine uses a very inaccurate formula to guess your body fat.

There are many factor that are not taken into result and this is where ther errors come in.

Skin fold caliper testing is far more accurate if performed properly!
