Good Day All,

After months of research and reading on various training disciplines, training programs, all the fancy, freaky and obscene diets, the advice and info steroids and supplements on the internet, I keep on coming back to this forum and the information shared on here. I have read about 70% of the posts on here especially the diet/nutrition section. And also because it is a local site, not an overblown overseas forum, I think one can relate to each other better here.

Me and the 'Missus' have dusted off the old training gear and decided that for our goal of losing weight and getting back into shape a good balanced gym routine and diet is our preference as oppose to jogging around the neighborhood bouncing our fat bellies and asses all over.

We have used the info in the diet section to do all the calc.'s and started compiling our diet from there. Obviously it will need some fine tuning as we go along. But at least we have a starting point and plan.

I have only one question about the diet planning. My wife have to use Eltroxin everyday because of the thyroid problem. This has caused some havoc with her weight. How much more should we reduce her calories in order to ensure she will lose weight safely. The information I have suggests one should reduce 250-500 calorie deficit on daily required to lose weight. Must she reduce her calories even more?

Thanks

Hi Gringo

First - Welcome to the forum

Second - about your question. Don`t reduce calories too drastically. What you would do is some trial and error. Work out your calorie requirements. Reduce by 200 or so. Monitor your weight, and how your clothes fit. If you are not loosing weight then you could adjust it some more. You can also increase your cardio, to burn more calories. What you are looking for is slow and consistent weight loss. Reducing your calories too much, has a negative impact on the body, and your metabolism slows down.

Did she ever diet in the past? A lot of times people try to loose weight, by drastic cutting calories. Then they loose a few kg/cm, and then loose focus or will and start eating poorly again. What then happens is that you slowed down your metabolism and then starting eating badly, picking up more weight than when you started.

You would need to get your metabolism up again. So eat a lot of volume. Foods that are low in calories, like your green veg. So you will have a lot of volume of food, but still low in cals. Also need to eat often.

Please post your stats, macros and your proposed diets, and then we can have a look from there.

What dosing of eltroxin is your wife on and is she taking her eltroxin away from medication and meals? I have had a few chats with an endocrinologist and he has said that alot of people mess up with eltroxin as you need to take it 1 hour before food or medication, so that nothing will effect it. Also another thing is, people with thyroid problems can have an issue with stomach acidity and not having food broken down fully due to low ph in the gut, so would be beneficial to add in betanine with Pepsin 2-3x a day with solid protein meals.

When was your wife's last blood test done to check thyroid levels?

Thank you GrootD for all the advise. We have had little set back in starting of on the diets and training, flu busting our balls so to speak. If all goes well we should be up by next week.

We have discussed starting of little slower with the reducing the calories, i.e. starting at 200 and then dropping it off gradually like suggested. Wifey of course is in a hurry to start dropping kg's! LOL! But she will she have to patient.

Will post stats before we start. :)

Empire,

Thanks for the info!!! Now that is what I meant when I said I keep on coming back to this forums and site!!!

Her Dr. has never told her about the timing effect of the Eltroxin and food. Also, the stomach acidity info is also new info, because she actually does suffer from that constipation and upset stomach on a regular basis.

Her last bloods were done about 6 months ago, she is due sometime soon again.

Only some doctors actually have done research about the timing of eltroxin. There are actually a few studies stating the t4 needs to be dosed at night. But if not if needs to be taken first thing before any other medication or food.

Well hopefully she will be able to see results with the recommendations I have suggested.

When she gets her next bloods she must insist on getting a full thyroid panel done. Not just tsh and t4. You also want to see the rate in which it converts to t3 and will give you a good indication of if her metabolism is doing well.
