Hey guys,

What is your opinion on using lean beef biltong occasinally for protein during the day?

Obviously you would need to watch the salt intake and possible blood pressure issues associated with this.

Obviously also not an everyday option.

Any thoughts?

Excellent source of protein, and you can have it everyday if you can afford it.

If everybody does it, is it still cheating?

hi Guys, I had another batch of my own biltong come out yesterday and I was wondering if anybody know the macros on lean biltong that was made with AAA grade silverside? It will also probably depend heavily on how dry en biltong is because off the original weight vs dried weight.

My second question is, does the dried biltong maintain its original protein content and is now just "concentrated"?

Yes.

I bought one of those Verimark food dehydrators and it works well. Leave it on overnight and you have biltong in the morning. Can hold about 2.5kg of meat, end up with just over a kilo of biltong. Still makes it about R100/kilo with rump, but it's super concentrated as you're taking 2.5 and drying it out to a kilo but keeping the total protein the same.

I think they discontinued the model. Is a bit flimsy and not going to last for years, but certainly works well.

Yes the net protein will be the same. Yes you could say its concentrated now because say 100g of raw meat had 25 g protein and you dried the meat to make it down to 50g then you still have the same amount of protein in a piece of meat that is half the mass. All that is lost during the drying process should be water mass
