Basmati is a longer grain rice and therefore generally has a lower Gi compared to normal rice. If you are going for basmati rice go for brown basmati otherwise i would stick to the brown rice (much cheaper too). just compare the nutritional values of the rices at the shops to help you decide

So what exactly do you look at when going to buy rice? I always thought the lower the gi the better? cause then its slow release or am I wrong here?

What do you want to get from rice? nutritional wise? I know carbs but what else?

You want a rice that's low Gi, you also want one that has fibre (hence the brown rice or the brown basmati as the rice hasn't been processed) as the fibre also slows down digestion. The carbs should be similar in the rices from what I remember but as for the Gis, I dont think they are always indicated on the packets so google it. If you can afford brown basmati then go for it otherwise brown rice will do. You can always add lentils or beans to your rice as the are high in fibre and the more fibre there is, the lower the overall Gi. Just google some rice's on the net, specifically for Gi values and compare. A good site for this is www.nutritiondata.com , it will tell you the Gi as well, as well as the cals, nutritional breakdown etc, it really is a great site

When two foods are both low GI it doesn't really matter what you eat. Remember GI testing is a rather crude thing: They just give you fifty gram of carb and measure the blood glucose levels within the next two hours. One food tested in a laboratoy can give a GI value of 45 while in a different lab using different test sujects this value could be 55. So the GI value is just a guide. A low GI food will give consistently lower reading than a high GI food, but given the error I don't think there is much between two foods that have similar GI.

Eat the brown or brown basmati, whichever you prefer the taste of...

Sorry if I offend you
Its just my point of view
