A lot of people on this board, have said they have a problem getting ketostix to change colour whilst following a ketogenic diet for bodybuilding eg. Palumbo style diet.

If you look at the macro ratios of the Palumbo diet, it's not really a ketogenic diet, it's more of a glucogenic diet as the protein content (1.5g/lbs) is way too high for the body to enter deep ketosis. You're running your body off the conversion of dietary protein into glucose and glycogen, and only losing fat faster than a traditional 40/40/20 diet, probably due to lower insulin levels and reduced calorie consumption.

According to this scientific review on ketogenic diets for athletes, protein should be set at no higher than 25% of total calories in order to enter ketosis.

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC524...df/1743-7075-1-2.pdf

"At the other end of the spectrum, higher protein intakes
have the potential for negative side-effects if intake of this nutrient exceeds 25% of daily energy expenditure. One concern with higher levels of protein intake is the suppression of ketogenesis relative to an equi-caloric amount of fat..."

I switched my ratios around from 60% protein / 40% fat to 40% protein / 60% fat, within a few days my ketostix changed from trace (light pink) to medium (purple) ketones.

I just couldn't go as low as 25% protein, but i will experiment with it after a few weeks. I first want to see what the weight loss is like at the current ratio.

Hey dave how is your diet looking. what kind of foods are you eating and how did you structure it. Think it will be very informative to see how a daily keto diet looks like. On the the 60 protein and 40 fat. and visa verca.

I kept the calories exactly the same.

Diet is eggs, 2x chicken salads (including peppers and tomatoes) with olives ; 2x whey shake and omega 3:6:9 oil; steak with rosa tomatoes, nando's sauce and olive oil. As well as milk in my coffee.

For the eggs i just dropped some whites and added more yolks. For the salads i dropped some chicken and added more olives. Less whey more oil; less steak more oil etc.

The results are going to difficult to judge this week as i've just added 2iu's of GH and thus holding some water.

Sounds daring. Keep us up to date with what the results are, and dave by dropping the protein dont you feel that you can burn into the muscle or will the protein deficit not have a effect on that. Even while on cutting cycle, the less protein absorbed wont the cycle be inefficient ?

It's not that daring, i'm still keeping my protein at 1g/lbs. Ketosis is anti-catabolic by nature, so the darker the strips the less chance of muscle loss.

I'm not following Lyle MacDonald. I just used 1g/lbs as a starting point, as it's the minimum amount of protein recommened by most "gurus".

If you look at that scientific review i posted, protein should actually be set a lot lower in order to allow for ketogenesis.

In terms of the fat, it's not a specific g/lbs but just the remaining grams to make up 60% of the calories.
