Going for a 3day hike, diet help? was created by m0lt3n
Hey for the long weekend we will be hiking the drakensberg, its gonna be pretty tough. I was hoping I could get some advice. I already bought a crap load of protein, seed and cereal bars and some sweets, but am planning to rather drink a whey and wms shake as a snack.

At the moment for our meals its gonna be mostly John west tuna with either 2min noodles, cous cous or pro vitas. Any other ideas on meals? I dont know what is light weight veggies, havent seen dried stuff yet. What will make a nice meal with biltong?

Also, what supplements can I add to those shakes to minimis muscle loss, glutamine?

Breakfast will be oatso easy and a shake and/or biltong

Why not pre-make mince or steak which will keep for a few days... and then basmati rice.
Take banana's, biltong, almonds, whey, oats (you can have this raw with a whey shake), peanut butter sandwiches with low gi bread, pre-make tuna with basmati, and a few boiled eggs... just put some ice packs in the food bag... although that might increase the bag weight for hiking.

Give it a shot, you're only TESTing it...

lol, jap ice is out. I will be taking primus stove, but fruit and eggs is gonna be difficult not to smash. Will look at those stuff, didnt actually consider mince eggs or steak, will have to look at how heavy it is gonna be.

Space is limited, have to carry clothes, tent, matress, sleeping bag, food and stuff for cold weather. and of course extra water cause I have started to drink and sweat a lot lately. Last hike I carried 36kg which was a bit tough, I dont want to again and thats why I am asking advice

the MAX weight you should carry is a third of your bodyweight (even if you are really strong haha) and 3 days is very short so no need to go that heavy.

when we hike i make mince and dry it out on a flat baking tray in the oven at a low heat. its very light and you just add a little water and you have perfect mince.
i think you'll be fine with what you have. nuts and raisens are also great and those easy to make pasta dishes (royco i think?) come in very handy because you need enough carbs. enjoy bud!

ps stay away from soya mince, it tastes like... uhm... ja... :)

It's only 3 days, not a train smash by any means imo. When I go hiking I just make sure to take enough whey powder, biltong, mixed nuts and some dried fruit, over and above whatever else I might eat. It's light and easy to carry. As Frikkie says avoid any Soy protein like the plague. That stuff is a BB's worst nightmare.

i would do the biltong, peanuts and raisins, all caloire dence foods and are easily packed and light weight, having those whilst you are hiking will help you with long term energy over the whole day.... just make sure to drink loads of water on your hike...
