Hi Guys,

I not dissapeared. I have been reading your posts and comments and learning so much from this site its unbelievable! I have encountered a problem which i am sure u guys can help me (specially dj).

My wife is on a keto diet. After four days of not consuming any carbs(except for those small trace amounts in our protein), and she is not "feeling" the keto? Also the keto stix arent even showing trace amounts of ketones in her urine.

This is the second time that she has attemted the keto diet, and the last time she experienced the same problem. We have tried everything, even cutting her protein to just 80 grams a day. but still nothing. I on the other hand go into ketosis fairly easy, and the weight drops off like mad??

Can anyone shed some light on this what is she doing wrong?

you are going to have to put up her diet.
And what type of protein is she using, as concentrate is not good enough, u need isolate.
no carrots or simmilar veggies, only greens like spinach or broccoli.
no milk or dairy
stuff like that
u will have a higher muscle mass so can tolerate higher carbs than she can before being kicked out of ketosis

She isnt having ANY veggies at all. Protein consists of chicken breasts, and super lean mince, with protein shakes twice a day. All her fats are derived from egg yolks pbutter and oil. Good multivitamen ensures she is getting all the nutrients, and fish oil caps. She isnt having anything else.


This is what is concverning me, if we give her any less protein she will basically be starving????

As Molt3n wrote is she using isolate or concentrate whey?

She is using concentrate whey twice a day. Unflavoured whey concentrate

But do you guys think that the concentrate could be keeping her from going into keto? I thought that surely that couldnt prevent going in to ketosis?

I think it could be the concentrate since whey concentrate still contains a bit of lactose, and carbs, isolate on the other hand is almost only protein virtually no carbs or fats. try switching to isolate, hopefully that helps otherwise it might not even be the whey that's the problem,lets hope DJ can help

Some people just don't work on keto diets,I would maybe cut back on some fats and add in some carbs...I have some clients that battle on keto...

I have searched a bit and seen the following, DJ would be the expert on this though:
Whey Concentrate should not withhold her from going into Ketosis, provided her Protein intake is high enough.
Isolate is more effective as they have less carbs then concentrate.
Read this on animal pak forum:
"It has 3.5g of carbs per scoop. So 2 scoops per shake at 2 shakes a day puts you at a total of 14g of carbs solely from your shakes. That is not including whatever trace carbs you are going to get from the fat portion of the meal. Will it kick you out of ketosis by itself? No. But will it result in you going over your total amount of carbs during the day? Maybe. It would just make everything more difficult. But I'm not saying it can't be done."

Thank you everyone for your input. I will have her change to isolate and see what happens. If still nothing i will cut back on the fats. one last question though. If she is not in ketosis, is her body burning muscle when exercising. As there are no ketones available, does this present any form of danger to her(what is her brain and muscles using for fuel). Cause if it is dangerous, she should stop.....

What sort of cardio is she doing? If she's doing high intensity cardio that could throw her out of ketosis I think

No HIT cardio, she does weight training. When she does cardio, its very low very slow walking.

No she won't be burning muscle as she is still having adequate protein and calories from fat...sometimes it takes a full 2 weeks to go into ketosis by the way so just see how it goes...

Also - the Ketostix are far from 100% reliable.


Not everyone will show ketones in their urine via ketostix testing. Showing ketones in the urine is showing the excess ketones being excreted from the body, if her diet is as good as you say then she could be optimally using the ketones produced by the body to fuel her daily life thereby not having excess/wasted ketones to excrete from the body.

I used a lot of Real Hellmans Mayo when in keto rather than just oil all the time, made a great change.

She has now finally shown "traces of ketones" on the keto stix. I use the hellmans mayo as well, to change things up a bit as the oils tends to get VERY boring.
