VW Polo GTi was created by Bench86
I was in an accident and my car was written off. Looking at maybe buying the VW Polo GTi. Any advice on this car, or what else should I be looking at?

Sorry to hear dude. Hope you're ok. How much you looking to spend? I personally feel polos are very over priced. Was looking at the new 1,6 last year but opted for the Mazda 3 sport, much more value for money IMO

Just a bit of a stiff back, and bruising on my left leg. Have been off the weights for two weeks now, just started doing some cardio this week.

I personally like VW, and I like the new look Polo's (the car I wrote off was a 1.6 Polo). Was looking at the TDi, but I wanted a few nice extras like sunroof, heated leather seats and cruise controls. Can't find any TDi's with those factory fitted.

The GTi has all of that standard (except for sunroof), plus it seems quite powerful. I'm looking at spending round about R220k-R280k.

Hyundai and Mazda might be better value for money, but as for styling it's not quite my cup of tea. Too futuristic looking, I'm more of a conservative guy.

Yeah looking for something out of the box. Audi is basically VW in a more expensive packaging from what I've heard. The A3 is more expensive than the GTi, and the GTi packs more power and torque than the A3. Have been looking at the A1, but don't like the design that much.

The OPC's a bit heavy on the juice then, hey Gorilla?

The GTi gets combined consumption of 5.9L/100km, which is very decent.

@Chapel - I'd actually not mind a 4x4 like an Amarok or hilux, but a bit out of my price range though. Landies don't have the best track record, I've seen a friend get stuck in our res volleyball pit with one.

Thanks, it's a nice but crap situation to be in - I can buy a new car, exciting, but it's such a big decision. This will be my first car over R200k, I've always driven student cars (Corsa lites). Think I must maybe just shut my eyes and go for it.

Dude, audi a3 1.8t with sunroof and xenons and manual is about R270k, and comes with a 5 year 100 000km maintaince plan, its 120kw which isn't bad, but its audi, ask koe, he was gonna go for a rocco r and ended up going for a audi a5. The audi's scream class, and the vw's are more boy racers, the difference comes in with the maintaince plan, and audi assist, also u gotta look at when it comes up to the 5 year/100k km part u can extended that plan to 200k km. Which means all u pay for is tyres and petrol.vw's are 60000km /3 year if I am not mistaken, then the services are gonna cost u more... Just my opinion as I am in the same boat and I am going for the audi personally.

Had the polo gti 1.4 dsg last year. You will never get 5.9l/100km so forget that. The car is twin charged with a supercharger and a turbo so turbo lag is almost non existent. Who would thought a 132kw was possible from a 1400 motor. Just on the sunroof. Two guys from the vw forums were just driving along and their sunroofs just exploded. Just like that. No stone hitting it, nothing. That's supposed to be shatterprufe tempered glass too but they had bits and pieces all over them. So sunroof on a polo seems like a factory issue. Overall though u will really enjoy the car if dsg is ur thing. Me, I'm old school and like manual. That was one of the reasons I sold her. Oh and no launch control on this box but some of the tuners are developing software for it

Just checked Audi's website - the A3 1.8T manual is R290k, with cruise control, multifunction steering wheel, leather upholstery and heated seats and sunroof an additional R30k in extras. So that's R320k.

The GTi gives you all that for R268k, and you can purchase a 90,000km mainenance plan for around R23k.

I do like Audi, but I think it's just a tad out of my price class, already on the higher end of the scale on my budget with the GTi.

What's ur max monthly spend bro? Reason I'm asking is because u can get a brand new Golf 6 gti for R4300 on vw family plan. The golf is far more stable after 200km/h. The polo felt a bit wayward like u driving in heavy wind. That's coz its so light but mainly the superior suspension. I normally run my cars well off the clock (within a controlled environment ofcourse) but polo had me tapping off early. Just didn't feel safe

To be honest I'm just considering the GTi because I can get it with a sunroof and factory fitted leather seats. The DSG gearbox and power output is major plusses, and it's not too heavy on the juice. Doubt that I'll be doing +200 km/h very often. :-)

By the way, how do you find the DSG on the car? Is it nice?

The thing with the family plan is the big balloon payments at the end - R4,300 doesn't sound a lot, but in five years time you have to fork out R126,000 or sell the car. It also means you pay a lot more interest and a whole lot less capital in each instalment.

There is no problem with the dsg box at all. The changes are instantaneous. I'm not a dsg fan though. Had the scirocco and polo in dsg and I personally hate dsg as it takes the driving experience away from the driver. My friends would never go back to manual as they swear by it. U will definitely enjoy it if u like dsg. The box in normal drive mode changes to quickly so if u are cornering hard and meant to be in 3rd but reach redline, its gonna change up and guess what's gonna happen to u on that bend. The polo gti doesn't have leather hey. It has alcantara which is like suede. I always put my cars on baloon payments and haven't had a problem since I started doing that in 2009. I change cars regularly too. Currently have a 35 edition gti and love it. VW fan for life

You won't go wrong with the Polo Gti hey. The 7-speed dog box is awesome and not to mention the amount of fun you can have with the peddle shifts. Its amazing the amount of power they got out of a 1.4. Throw in some Revo software and you'd be getting another 20-30kw. For the price range you're looking at, you won't get any other car thats "complete" as the Gti.

Loving your posts Ice-Rip! Always a pleasure to see a man who was born and bred with a certain car brand. +1 (+10 If you were BMW for life or if you convert now  )

I.m.o the normal GTI is a much nicer driving experience and much better for those that push the car to its limit. If you go for the polo GTI then you will by no means be disappointed. Just always keep a sharp eye on those finance contracts- there are some shrewed rats out there! Definately get a software remap for those turbos you will not believe the difference!

Sweet thanks Pyro. Almost went BMW but then common sense prevailed and won the day lol. With regards to software, the polo won't make as much as 30kw as its already tuned to the max but guys are getting around 15kw or so. I am running a unitronic stage 1+ map on my car. Went unitronic over Revo based on price and haven't looked back. Also very reputable tuner. My car standard makes 173kw at the fly wheel and 300nm of torque. That's roughly 155kw and 280 nm at the wheels (wheel power is what counts not flywheel as the manufacturer advertises). After map around 190kw and 385nm at the wheels. Feels awesome
