Moving to Germany was created by Pyroclasm
It seems that I will be moving to Germany next year where I shall do an apprenticeship in industrial engineering. I will be going on my own so it's a scary proposition for me. Anybody have any tips/suggestions for me to make the transition a bit smoother would be greatly appreciated. Hope you are all smashing food in your faces!

No Nazi jokes. Its a sensitive topic for some reason.

No but really that sounds amazing. Congrats man.

To you it may look like I just did a push-up... But in fact, I just bench-pressed the world.

Hey Pyro, get yourself a lonelyplanet German book and start there. It'll get you into the language quickly and will teach you all the essential stuff in the beginning, after that go deeper into vocab and grammer.

Hope it helps.

We just got back from DE (been to UK first for 7yrs then Germany for 2.5)... Worst time of my life, i'm sorry to say. Stayed in a wee little town called Detmold (NRW), where no-one speaks or attempts to speak English. Had a toddler and baby there and was stuck inside most of the time due to heavy (1m +) snowfall... not the best time of my life! If I have ONE tip it would be to learn the language asap. the Germans are not the friendliest or most helpful and you have to be able to communicate. Beer's cheaper than water there, yes. Also, you collect your empty plastic bottles and cans and take them to the store for a refund of almost half the price! Any red meat and even chicken is very pricy, as they eat mostly pork. public transport's quite nice but not nearly as well as in the UK. Hope you have a great time though!

That's exactly what I was looking for tbh. Just some sort of angle of attack strategy when wondering into the unknown. I am also going to small mountain town on the eastern side of Germany.

@MissM and @Vega5: Thank you for your experienced input much appreciated.

@Zimbulk: We must def make a plan bro! I think the Zim's are really cool.

@Ian: I dunno how long I will be able to resist.

Anyone else with something to add would be greatly appreciated.

Start practicing:

Shut up and Squat!!

Yeah, Chicken is expensive there I believe. I didn't want to say "raise" your own chickens.
