MIT engineers discovered that exercising muscles release biochemical signals called myokines, which stimulate neurons to grow significantly. Additionally, neurons also respond to the physical stretching similar to muscle contractions, promoting nerve growth as effectively as myokines do. This dual impact of exercise on nerves could aid in developing therapies for nerve damage and neurodegenerative diseases, potentially restoring mobility by targeting both biochemical and physical muscle effects.
