To be honest, the Windows firewall should do the trick. The chances of getting your personal PC hacked is very little and actually what is the point?

If hackers are after your internet banking details they will rather try to do a phishing attack instead of accessing your computer. I think it's time I start a topic on just how easy it is to do a phishing attack and we'll start with Facebook... anyone interested in stealing login details?

I WOULD BE INTERESTED HAHA not to be malicious, but just out of curiosity!!!

Just started mucking about on PC and router settings lately, so any and all knowledge would be cool.

Want to use a 3rd party firewall to set up outbound rules to stop spyware/trojan/dialers etc from doing there thing.

To me it seems Very hard now a days to be able to gain access to somebody's personal computer via a hack without them having malware on the PC.
Thoughts?

Ok, I'll create a topic for hacking facebook and I'll upload the modified code I just coded...

I've never been into hacking computers, but when I worked as a network admin I had to test our wireless setup very often for weaknesses as laaities were spotted with laptops outside all the time trying to get free internet.

When I studied IT and Programming I spent allot of time cracking games ect, but got into trouble with Valve Software, because I and some oke from Russia managed to make the first bot pack for Counter-Strike Source using the bots of the previous version of Counter-Strike called Condition Zero. You see CS Source didn't ship with bots originally, so when we ported the old binaries to the new game it caused a global confusion as bots were suddenly playing online and that wasn't suppose to happen.

The thing was that the program I made required the user to enter his Steam account details so the installer can find the correct files to patch, Valve then used that to scare people from using the bots by telling them that the installer is sending the Steam account details to us... which was false of course.

I use ZoneAlarm the free one.
And no-one gets onto my pc through a network,
and nothing gets out of my pc.

I was using ZoneAlarm for a while, but for some reason I rolled back to Windows firewall. I think my internet connection and my browsers were starting up to slow.

Would you say its better(default) than W7 firewall, or have you configured yours manually?

I don't know anything about Win7 firewall.
You have to configure ZoneAlarm manually, you know accept legit connections and decline unknown connections.

Ya, Im still in the very, very early stages of learning about routers and firewalls etc .... like sub A level

On a most basic level, would this be correct...
I visit site ( A )( B )( C ) only ...
I configure the firewall to block all connections then add a rule to allow it to connect to ( www.A.com ) and ( www.B.com ) etc ????

As admin said your windows firewall would do the trick... the firewalls that come with things like ZoneLabs, etc are program firewall ability to block ports, etc..

Best method if you want your system secure, create a 'limited account' that can't install any software and just be able to run applications and bang no way you can open that dodgey e-mail or application and backdoor your system.

and if you intrested in all that type of security stuff, as admin said, study 'security' and you will learn ways to defend yourself as that is what an admin has to do, so you can just as easly hack systems if you know how to test your system for security breaches etc..

Go to qualys website and subscribe to their security news letter this way you can stay up to date with what programs are vulenrable, etc...

also if you intrested in security and stuff you need to learn how to code and pretty low level too then start playing with some unix os (openbsd / fbsd) or a linux OS (debian or gentoo) other flavours are ok, I prefure gentoo as you can 'compile' you programs with different cflags, etc to speed up the applications as they compiled for your arch, etc...

good luck, if you like I can give you access to my old hack.co.za archive?

Lekka reply mate

When you say 'limited account' that can't install any software and just be able to run applications" does that mean I wont be able to download and install apps as well? Could you explain this some more please ?

Would definitely like to take you up on that offer about the archive you mentioned, thanks

Uhm, ZoneAlarm has off/medium/high security settings,
when you start you pc up, different progs will be denied access to whatever port they want by zonealarm, and zonealarm gives you a prompt to accept or decline.
It's just a learning phase, after 2 startups any new prompts will most likely be new programs or trojans/scanner bots...

Hope it helps.

Thanx N3rd. Seems to work almost like UAC does. It doesn't sound familiar so I most likely didn't use ZA and probably used something else.

My question still stands though, if I want to manually add rules to say a 3rd party firewall.(just out of interest) :)

Ok, bro, my firewall can only manually add programs to allow or block.
I think the professional (read "not free") version can add ip's and sites to block.

Uhm, I think some browsers can block sites.
My Opera browser for eg. Tools > Advanced > Blocked Content...
I added the following h t t p : / / * . c o m / * (ignore spaces)
Wich blocks all .com sites, "*" acts as a wildcard.

FireFox and IE can block sites too, I think.

Helpful?

Yes, and
h t t p : / / * . * / *

would block all sites.

Jack, are you talking about (MSE) Microsoft Security Essentials.
Ive been using it for a good few months(9/10) with a beta version of Win 7 in between trying out trial versions of different Anti Virus software and its pretty decent, especially being free. You don't feel it, pretty low on resources. Only thing I don't like is lack of settings and tweaks.

I'm mucking about with Avast 5.04 at the moment (trial ver) and it seems pretty cool. It has boot time scan which is pretty sweet (scans PC before operating system is active before any virus can run at start up)

Which Norton were you using?

It was a Corporate edition - dont know the version. The LAN admin told me to remove it and replace with MSE.
Browsing with IE has sped up plenty.

Avast! is very good.
I also have version 5 at the moment.

I don't like Norton and I haven't heard any good things from it. Are the newer versions better?

Tried Norton 2010(cracked) and it seemed pretty cool, other than uses lots of resources.
Lots of settings and tweaks  which I enjoy mucking about with. Also real time intrusion prevention, so you can see if things(IP's) that try to connect. Cant compare to older versions though, never tried them.

Ya, same liking Avast

Ya, Norton eats up your PC and leaves nothing for you to enjoy.

ZoneAlarm also shows IP's trying to gain access to your pc or out of your pc. (remember?)

Avast + ZoneAlarm = FREE!! :woohoo:
Plus your pc is not bogged down :)
