Hey people,
I know quite a few of the forum'ers are working in an IT related field, so I'll state my case here.

I have a BSC IT degree and I'm currently doing my Honors BSC IT, I don't like programming.

What work is there for me, part-time this year
and full-time next year.

Should I consider doing IT advisory at KPMG (any opinions)?

I like software development, figuring out how the whole thing fits together, but the programming is not for me...

And I don't think you can go straight to being at the top, you have to start out at the bottom ie. programming...

Nope, not really arty, but that stuff is a degree on its own, don't want to study for 7-8 years before I start earning any money...

I didn't mean that I don't want to start at the bottom, I'd rather do something such as a junior system developer/analyst, than a junior programmer, mkay...

Believe me, I'm at the bottom now, I'm not afraid of the hard work, I just despise programming, especially struggling on my own like I am now...

A friend of mine was working as an IT analyst at KPMG, now he is at Excelion working as a Murex Technical consultant and making big bucks so I think KPMG is a good place to start

Thanx Beesting, What I like about KPMG is the training and support, but I'm afraid that if you work there you would have to sign your soul away...
Did your friend like it there?

I'm with you man, been in IT for 9 years, tried the whole dot net, Java etc. bores the crap out of me.... Moved to network design, even that's getting a bit much now... At the mo I'm trying everything to branch out, even some entrepeneurial things.

I've never done any IT courses, and I've worked on all levels, you have to get some experience....

As far as I know, he enjoyed it. I don't see why you have to sign your soul away. Look, you have to start somewhere and I think its a good place to start. If you don't enjoy it you will still have the experience and a reference for your CV so you can move around if you find somewhere else that intersts you. Experience is never a waste of time

Maybe try organising yourself with a few internships, then you can find what interests you the most and where you want to go in the future

I am going to apply for every internship that I can,
but that is for next year...

This year I need to do something part-time for a little pocket cash.

Hey,

I`m not really into IT, more into Mech.Eng but does have some programming experience. We all had to start from the bottom and work our way up. Trust me just get your feet into a good company, the rest will work out for it self. KPMG is an excellent company to work for. After a year or 2, you will be able to pick and choose :)

Alot of my varsity buddies (computer eng, and IT) is smilling al the way to the bank and they just started.

Their is alot of oportunities into IT it its just baout to get into the door.

Hope you make the right decision.

Ciao

IT isnt all just coding. Yes you may start there but thats a good thing. If youre worth anything you will be allowed to move around to gain experince in other areas of IT - analisys, architecture etc.

There is always the chance to work for a smaller company where you can be a one man show and do the whol shebang, from Networks to coding. But i'd only do that with a couple of years experience under my belt.

Finish your studies and apply at a reasonable size company to get a feel for what the IT work env is all about.

BTW - Varsity is a fishbowl - the real work is outside of that.

why don't you hack your brain!

dude, IT is crap, sold my first PC when I was 12, built up, put add in paper, etc... and been doing it ever since... it's crap and I hate clients and I hate everyone... hope you can handle it, but I sure as hell hate it.. If it wasn't for my salary i'd find another type of job ASAP. When I first went to the UK while I was looking for work I was doing building, that was so much better, I was outside and happy. not inside hacking away on a fucking computer..

Thanks for the optimism bud :)

I hear you, I'd also rather do a brain-dead job where my body does the thinking :)

*smile* make sure you go into a very broad range of IT and you doing lots of things, eg: I do web design (php), shell scripting (bash and perl maybe some awk and sed), hardening (os, kernel, ...) virtual env (linux vserver) or freebsd (8) jail. asterisk, mysql (replication, failover), apache, postfix and qmail, playing a bit with windows now too as pointless having an mcse since 1998 and never using it, heee. so playing with exchange a bit too. and so and so and so....
