A Chiropractor is essentially a neuromusculoskeletal specialist. Meaning we specialise in ailments of the nervous system (nerve impingements, sciatica), muscles (strains, spasm, myofascial trigger points, imbalances) and skeletal system (joint pathologies, subluxations, spinal problems).
Chiropractors use a very hands on approach utilising dry needling, soft tissue manipulation, cross friction, stretching, exercises, and the Chiropractic hallmark, spinal manipulation.
All Chiropractors have full training in medical diagnostics and are equipped with the necessary skills to diagnose all forms of disease and injury (something which sets us apart from Physio's). A Chiropractor can then diagnose your problem and determine whether Chiropractic treatment can benefit you, or if not, refer you to the appropriate specialist.
As well as the spine, most Chiropractors are also trained in treating injuries and pathologies of the extremities eg tennis elbow, knee pathology, muscle strains, joint sprains, shoulder impingements.
The hallmark of Chiropractic, the spinal manipulation, is the most unique thing about Chiropractics, but also the most controversial. While many other professions, including osteopaths, GPs, and physios, perform adjustments (manipulation), few have recieved the extensive training that Chiropractic students have (at least 4 years of prac classes, as well as all theory related to it). Also, many of these professions use different techniques to Chiro's. Our adjustment is defined as a low amplitude, high velocity thrust... Unfortunately the misuse of the adjustment without paying heed to contraindications has earned the controversy that exists.
Chiropractic care can differ from Dr to Dr as we each develop our own preferences and focus on different aspects. There are also numerous new techniques being taught as postgrad courses eg Kinesiotape. Currently in South Africa there are two different institutions offering the course, Durban University of Technology and University of Johannesburg. Both courses are an Masters of technology degree, over minimum of 6 years, and include a masters final dissertation. The degree offered in SA is rated as one of the most comprehensive in the world, and the course itself is ranked in the top 5 most challenging degrees in the country (above medicine i'll have you know
