Creatine and BCAA's and caffeine. Remember these are only supplements to the diet. The diet is where the magic happens!

Multi-vitamin: There are a couple of "young adult type" ones available. Ensure Zinc, Magnesium, Vit-D are all in.
Omega 3: Fish oil/ krill oil caps. Don't go for Omega 3,6 & 9s. Just go for Omega 3s.
Creatine: Will see growth and performance increase

If you are his father/guardian/whatever, cook him good food and teach him about healthy food at a young age. :)

Sorry guys I have to jump in here...

At most I would give a 13 year old a multivitamin and a "post practice " protein shake.

I don't think creatine is necessary at such a young age, and would save it for around 15-16.

Agree 100% with omega 3

When it hurts... That's when i start counting, because that's when it starts to count.

I wouldn't advise Creatine for a 13 year old. There are no studies to show it's effects on paediatric kidneys.

His hormones are going to have enough fluctuations which are going to affect many systems the effects on which supplements aren't well understood.

Diet, diet, diet. Make sure he eats healthy and watch his training.

This is a very good article on training in youngsters:

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3445252/

The jist is that excessive weights are not advised but that there is a role in aiding strength development.

@jefnofear & @pyro: I actually take back even creatine. Considering his age money is better spent on keeping his health on the right track. I advise the Vit's and Omegas because as a young teen we can make some assumptions that his dieting mentality may not be as ours is even jetnofear's. IE tendency to skip meals, include unhealthy snacks ect ect. If it's my money, my son, I'd take the guy grocery shopping with me and tell about the food I put in the trolly.

@Cyclo: jefnofear doesn't mention weight training though. But agree with your post.

Is there any reason not to give him Creatine?

YES! His age! At 13, he is too young! I had a relative who was 18 then fail a medical cos of kidney function due to creatine. 3 months off creatine, he passed. At 13 does anyone really know what's going to happen to his kidneys? TOO YOUNG!

What Is the Minimum Age for Taking Creatine?

Minimum Age
It's recommended that you be at least 18 years of age to take creatine supplements, according to KidsHealth.org. Research into creatine supplementation has focused almost exclusively on adults age 18 to 35, according to the American College of Sports Medicine consensus statement found in the March 2000 issue of the journal "Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise." Research showing the long-term effects of creatine on growing children and adolescents is lacking. Due to unknown risks, avoid taking creatine if you're under 18.

No supplementation.. not nearly enough information around long term effects on supplements and children not yet developed. A balanced eating plan, include lots of veggies and have fruit. As your child grows up small things can be added here and there.. if he has a long term career ahead, you want just that, a healthy body that can recover quickly and hasn't placed much strain on his vital organs

Hey Bro, that's why I said fruit and vegs. If you not getting enough, that's when you need to supplement. Nothing wrong with some whey, as long as it's in lign with what your child requires, the kidneys are still not fully developed, so to much protein isn't the greatest idea, however you know your supplements and how much they can take
