Having the fats in the nuts with the sugar from the raisins can actually blunt your insulin spike.

Is this a good or bad thing? I realise a certain amount of insulin is needed for growth and insulin spikes are brought on by the simple carbs or sugars which one should try and avoid but you still need the insulin so would a complex carb would be better because of the slower release?

Yes, short sugar = best after training to get big insulin spike.
Short sugar + fats = bad after trainig. Make big insulin spike small. Make muscle not grow so quick.

I would go for the brown rice. Whole wheat pasta isn't much different to normal pasta, unless you get the low gi pastas but I think they are quite pricy

I use both.
I noticed that the brown basmati I'm using is a bit too low GI for me.

basmati is stupid expensive.

Not really... I am able to get white basmati for R55 for 5kgs. I prefer brown rice to brown basmati. I altered white basamti and brown rice in my pre contest diet. But Brown rice is king when it comes to fibre and source of complex carbs. I put flax oil over mine to soften it with mixed herbs and chicken. Dont mind eating that day in a in day out!

Also I think brown rice works out cheaper than brown pasta (carbs per 100g).
