i know mine was. over the last 5 years of training, i have always follwed the pwo protocol to the tee and it has always lead to blunting of fat burning or fat gain. that was largely due to the massive amounts of carbs i was gulping down in it (60g).

now i know you probably thinking my diet must have been out hence my concerns arount the pwo shake however i can assure this was even at times when i follwed diet strictly consuming carbs only for breakfast, pre and pwo.

so maybe you are like me who in my opionion is extremely carb sensitive. ditch the high gi postworkout carbs then and eat whole food rather. my gains and fat loss have been so much better.

thanks Dj. i checked it out and knew about the cinnamon but not the chromium and ala. do you still follow the smae protocol of carbs for breakfast , pre and pwo only now that your insulin sensitivity has improved because if your are eating 3800 cals on a 50/30/30 split thats 475grams of protein which is a hell of a lot.

I don't understand this 'more sensitive to insulin'. Also I don't see how you can have a insulin spike on clean carbs and on a 50/25/25 split. Our bodies are perfectly balanced to not require any further supplement (chromium picolinate, etc). If you read this www.medbio.info/Horn/Time%203-4/homeostasis_2.htm , you will also notice the protein/insulin role with one another.

It's very simple you eat your food and if your sugar readings are in normal ranges their is no need to use any supplements.

I also feel that the only reason someone will lose weight by taking dextrose, etc after a workout is due to the serving size and what your body can metabolize during this 'window' and making sure it falls into their max calories that can be consumed for that day. EG: The higher calorie intake on training days can include your pre and post workout and that will be burnt off during training and absorbed after training.

So if you your PWO shake contains to many calories you will get fat and I don't see where 'insulin' actually comes into play, I find chromium more so helps balance levels not increase insulin when it's not needed or your would have some nasty lows if that was the case. The only way to know whether you need to do something or not is to monitor your readings.

I would like to understand this better as I don't think i'm getting the bigger picture?

It pretty much means that your body produces insulin when taking in carbs but if you are insensitive, the insulin your body produces is unable to get it's job done so your body produces more and more as there is still glucose in the blood....eventually you become diabetic. So now with all the excess insulin released in the body, it has to get used up somehow so instead of shuttling nutrients into the muscle, you store nutrients as fat (not sure of the exact mechanism by which and why this happens but that's how I understand it)

Thanks sting but is that possible on a 50/25/25 split? It's not like you digest allot of carbs?

my split was 50/30/20 and as soon as i spiked insulin pwo, i would be bloated and put on fat. it just doesnt work for me. understandable that insulin is very anabolic however a balance needs to be struck. i seem to be getting the best results with whey protein isolate, and bcaa (scivation xtend).

now since whey is also fast digesting, shouldnt the insulin secreted from whey do the job to create an anabolic environment without the sugars. im going to test this theory thoroughly and post up my gains, fat loss and recovery without the carbs

Not so much in a person who is sensitive to insulin. Im sure I have this problem. Thing is the lower the carbs in your diet, the more insulin sensitive you become, esp if carbs are taken post training so you would expect all carbs to be shuttled to the muscles and not stored as fat. I think the problem is coming in with high GI carbs and carb ups if you know you're at risk for diabetes or there is a family history of insulin resistance. I know the carb ups have their benefits for restoring glycogen, and it's role with leptin but Im starting to think that they may do more damage than good if you have this problem.

So I do agree with ice-rip about having low gi carbs/solid meal post workout if you have an insulin insensitivity problem, I have experienced the same thing, the hi gi carbs post workout and carb ups are making me gain which shouldn't happen in a person who isn't insulin insensitive. DJs protocol is worth a try though, if you can increase insulin sensitivity then do it.

I take in moderate carbs during breakfast; lunch and sometimes with evening meals. I have a low carb energy drink during a long cardio workout (2-4hrs session, anything less its only water) but i never consume the recommended 30g dextrose after gym work (usually in the late afternoon now). I only have my whey shake and glutamine. This works for me loosing bf.

ok the way i see it is this, insulin is your storage hormone, now if your body is not sensetive to insulin and you need 5 iu's to be secreted but the body is only sensitive to 2 of those 5,your body will secrete another 5iu's. there fore you are secreting 10iu when you only need 5,you make your body sensitive to the 5iu's you secrete and your body wont secrete more, less insulin makes u store less...make sense in my head lol

will also make sense cos when you start taking these insulin sensitising things you actually suffer from diabetic like symptoms such as that thirst, the thirst that doesnt seem to to stop... but after a couple days/1-2weeks you go back to normal meaning that your body isnt over secreting insulin as much... thats just my thoughts on the matter,i have tried it out as per advice from Doctari and well it seems to be working for me...
