Whaddup guys?

Whats your take on the zotman curls? Rich Piana swears by them, but its robs you of the negative rep on the biceps. You basically do a dumbell biceps curl to the top then supinate and lower which switces from the the biceps head at the top of the rep and engages the bracialis going down. They feel fantastic to do, but again what about the negative rep and how will it affect the growth of the bicep? I was just browsing the different styles of training from various bodybuilders and came across this. Tried them and like them, but they dont make sense mechanically if you are working biceps.

I haven't watched the video but Rich swears by a lot of idiotic things. If you remove the eccentric portion of the movement you are removing the most important part of the movement.
That said, from your description of the movement, it is just a way to work the bicep on the way up and brachialis on the way down which is safer than lowering the weight all the way down with a supinated grip as that is when your bicep tendons will be under the most strain which could result in injury. So it may not be ideal but it will work both muscles to some extent.

Biomechanincally speaking the safest and "best" way to do bicep curls is to use the hammer grip for the first portion of the movement, rotating to a supinated grip to the top, supinated eccentric down to about 90 degrees and then roll the wrist back to the hammer grip for the last part of the movement down to the starting position. That works both muscles in the safest way possible while getting both concentric and eccentric contractions of both.

Zotman curls are pretty intense and to add them in for a change isnt going to hurt you.

what you also need to understand is that we are, for the most part, pressed for time in the gym, but guys like rich Piana will go and to a 2 hour tricep session, so adding these in could be great if you are wanting to throw in some variation.

you need to find what works for you, and if a slight variation is needed then try it out. but i fully agree with hormonas with the eccentric part of the movement being vital. maybe add these in as finishers for your bicep and fore arms vs using them as your main bicep exercise.

I'm reaching my six week mark on the same routine and want to switch things up a bit to get the muscles guesing again. Generally I keep the heavy compound excersizes for each muscle group and periodically play around with other excersizes. In the case of biceps I will keep the standing barbel curls. I want to replace my concentration curls with something a bit more fun like the zotman curls and swap my preacer curls with seated incline dumbell curls with arms wide to the side. I like the variation that Hormonas described and will give them a try today. I will finish off with some 21's. I entered a body transformation competition at my gym so I need to up my game. Currently running a cycle of EQ @ 700mg/week and Supertest @640mg/week and started week 3 last night.
