Does the software you are planning to use run on mac? That's about the only important question!

My close mate makes all his on windows and its chilled.. Got quite a few friends who do. Trust me. You've heard a few of them at parties ;) Don't need a mac for it.

I own two iMac's and can't see myself ever going back to Windows again. OS X is very easy to use, thats why its so powerful.

Best would be to go to a store and play with one of the Mac's on display.

One of the huge advantages for making music on Mac is Logic Pro. For making electronic music it is amazing. I have Logic 9 and it comes with over 40GB of sound clips and samples.

To give you an idea, “Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster the People was made entirely in Logic Pro in only 1.5 days!

I've been working on a Mac for almost 10 years now. You won't make a mistake in buying one. If you can afford it, buy it.

Yup mine sits powered off, hacked it, over clocked GPU/CPU, installed all the cool stuff I could, now its a waste of time and space... So it will just sit somewhere in the house not being used.

Yes, I've yet to find someone that actually use a pad for something productive. Now suddenly Apple claim that pads are the post PC era, kak.

I bought my iPad 3 to reply emails on the go and tried it once while waiting at the dentist and I've never been so uncomfortable and slow. I'll probably have to buy a Macbook Air 11" now and regret spending the R7500 on a useless piece of equipment.

What you think of 13" 2.5 GHz Macbook Pro MD101 500GB ?

It's just below R13k, so that's not bad considering its Apple, lol.

I think it's a nice machine and I'll rather buy that model than one with a retina display, because I see many complaints about ghosting on the retina screens as well as slow performance on graphic intensive tasks as the current mobile GPU's can't keep up with the ultra high resolution of the retina displays.

I will buy MD101 and replace the HDD with a Samsung 830 SSD and just run the command in the terminal to enable TRIM for non Apple SSD's.

EDIT: If you plan on encrypting your data with FileVault, do not buy an SSD using a SandForce controller as it will half the performance. Samsung's 830 or 840 Pro SSD's are the way to go, the rest suck.

Thanks for the info, I'm going to get some quotes on Samsung drives.

I couldn't find any local suppliers and private sellers that had were too expensive, so I imported one from here: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/845683-RE...SERIES_INTERNAL.html

Got it under a week. Taxes was another R275 if I remember correctly, but I got lucky as it's usually allot more.

What about the sound card? It's my most important factor for doing recording.

I have no idea how good the sound card is in the Macs, but there is no chance in upgrading that in a Mac unless you are willing to do some soldering and coding your own drivers. I'm sure that is going to be a painful experience.

Going to split this thread and add it to the laptop one...

I cannot find info on which sound card the Macbook Pro MD101 use, but it's probably integrated into the intel chipset.

The Mac Pro seems to be the only Mac with upgradable sound and video card as that it is intended for heavy studio work anyway. (Don't buy the current Mac Pro though, because there is a rumour of an upgrade in the near future)

Even my iMac uses integrated intel HD audio, but I'm pretty sure you will find an external sound recorder for Mac that cost an arm and leg.

You can get a USB external sound card for your MacBook Pro as well. Check out Creative's stuff. A mate of mine uses one of their's. Don't know which model though.

Out of my personal experience, if money is no issue then go Mac but if you want value for your money and performance go get a laptop. I'm working on Macs everyday from the macbooks to the normal desktop macs and I will still go home to a PC. For the same price you can get a really decent PC/laptop compared to the same price range macbook. I'm not saying one is better than the other since macs will outperform similar spec Pc's. I'm just looking at the value for money perspective
