I just returned from almost a year up and down into deepest darkest Africa.
My advice, don't even do it with a prescription.
The one guy had a cold going up and took some Berrocca, Lingtagon, all those fizzy stuff to fight it. Our convoy got stopped, the local police thought it was drugs, had him locked up, made him take a few and sat there waiting for him to act funny. After hours and hours we were able to leave..
If you will be stationary at a base camp / work site it might be a different story, you might only be searched at the airport.
Always remember you are going into Africa, they are uneducated, and they don't like the "fair skin intruder" in their land. They will do everything possible to be a pain to you....
