Omeprazole/Losec was created by Liftmeister
Hi guys

A friend of mine does body building and competed twice thus far. He has a chronic ulcer which he uses chronic medication for. The meds is called Omeprazole or Losec. He takes it in the morning on an empty stomach, the problem with this however is that it retains water so for competition he cannot get completely shredded as a result. Does anyone know a way around it or have more info on this med or what can be done to minimise water retention?

Any help is greatly appreciated

He can also ask his doc to change him to Omez or Nexiam, Nexiam being the better but a hell of a lot more expensive.

Omez is Omeprazole. Just one of the 20 or so generics of the original Losec. They are a class of drug called the Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI's).

Nexiam (Esomeprazole) is the newest in the class and pricey. Till about two weeks ago there was a generic newly released but they infringed on some patent rights of Nexiam and have thus been withdrawn of the market.

I would guess that the water retention will also be a problem but that is the least of your mates worries. Unfortunately if he has a bad ulcer the stress (both physically and mentally) preparing for comps is doing his ulcer no favours. If he has any other stress factors (eg personal and professional) then the problem is compounded almost exponentially.

Any stimulants have the potential to really aggravate the ulcer so would advise against something like FFF.

Omez omeprazole and traditional omeprazole are used to treat different conditions and have different side effects. I have used traditional omeprazole and could not handle the stomach discomfort, omez omreprazole I could handle but was not strong enough. It is not a Generic. Nexiam as stated previously is by far superior. Either the information posted here is true or my Specialist Surgeon is a right nob.

Dude. I'm not going to get into a bun fight. Omez IS a generic of Losec. Whether the quality and efficacy is the same is debatable. There is more to meds than simply putting an active in a capsule.
Isomers, enantiomers, particle size, dissolution rates, bio-availability and a whole host of other factors is why companies spend billions on R&D.
Then also people react differently.
However, there is no comparison between Omez and Nexiam. A truer comparison would be between Losec and Nexiam. Nexiam should still pip it though.

Neither I am going to get into a forum fight nor was I fighting, its silly. Seems like we both agree on Nexiam so problem solved.

As far as what he told me i dont think it is that severe whereby any added stresses causes issues. Its just a matter of he has the ulcer and he has to use the med and thats about it. Ive done some research on Nexiam yesterday and sent him a few links where we discovered that water retention is only between .25% and 25% depending on how long it is used. When he is scheduled for an appointment with his doc again he will get some further info and then request a script for the Nexiam. I will keep you guys updated in case anyone else does/might experience this in future.

Thanks again for your input and advice
