To become a personal trainer? was created by Norris7
Howzit guys.

I have been doing a lot of thinking about studying to become a personal trainer.

I love healthy living and fitness side of life and think that I would really enjoy the profession.

The only thing is that I have heard conflicting stories about the job.

Some people tell me its an amazing job and they love it,also saying it can be very lucrative.

Then on the other side of the coin you have some people who tell me its not as glamorous as one would think and that most trainers work very hard only to earn a mediocre salary.

Now my question is...are there any personal trainers (I'm sure there must be) on the forum who can honestly shed some light on the profession?

I am really interested in what you guys think.

Thanks for you time. B)

I am 22 years old.

Finished school a couple years back and have just been bumming around doing odd jobs here and there.

Just basically trying to earn money to support my habit IE food and supplements

Now its time to buckle down and start to get myself on the right career path

I train at a private quite upmarket gym were the trainers seem to be busy and the best car any of them drive is an opal corsa... I don't think it a profession you go into if you ever want to move out of your parents house.

I may be wrong and mean no disrespect

Go big or go home...

Yep there is no money in it unfortunately. Look into studying biokinetics, sport science, kinesiology or something like that. You can go either the BA or BSc route. That way you'll have a degree and you can branch into different things.

Thanks for the honest replies.

I think I might do what Muscleaddict says and study something else in the industry like sport science or biokinetics.

I was taught this along time ago when I started my own business. There are only so many hours in a day u can sell in the field of consulting. Why do u think people like medical doctors have started producing and manufacturing their own vitamin brands or our consulting to companies who manufacture and get a rebate for all the sales the company has? Its because u only have 8 hours in a day that u can sell, where in those 8 hours u can sell 100 products per province giving u sales of about 800 products roughly a day, now if u getting a rebate of r10 a product that's 8000 a day vs a consulting fee of 500-800 an hour(depending on what line of work u are in) meaning u only earn between 4000-6400 a day and u have to work hard for that money vs passive income. It's the principle of working smart not hard. Same goes with personal trainers, a lot of them are just over rated therapists for those clients who have to much money and just want to sit around and be seen at gym, or u get the smart ones who sell supplements or vitamins or even juice to their clients, they make the 300 for an hour training session, 150 on some protein powder, 100 on a pack of vitamins and then 300 on some fat burners, so that's 850 for the hour cos they have gotten smart but those are once a month sales if u are lucky and that has not even taken rent for the gym into account, virgin active charges trainers 8100 a month to work in their facilities, so if u only getting 300 a session if u are lucky u need to do 27hours of work to break even! See where this is going? Don't get me wrong there are trainers in jhb charging 500-600 an hour and they have 4 women coming in at once per session so they make r2000 an hour easily for women to have a gossip session... yes it takes forever to build up those sort've client bases but it all ends the same way, u can only sell so many hours a day. personal training is the same thing daily with just different people, the job becomes mundane and repetitive and it's not a career choice it's basically a job choice if u ask me...

Hope u get my drift and take it to heart in your own ways

Thanks DJ.

I'm going to have to think about a different career choice.

What would be a nice job is to be a rep for a supplement company IE, SSN,Evox ,Nutritech B)
