Lumbar scoliosis was created by Oom G
Hi guys,

Been diagnosed with lumbar scoliosis, busy going to a physio for dry needling and massages, just wanted to find out if anyone else has had this and can maybe advise some exercises or stretches that can help to speed up recovery as it's completely put me out of gym now

Shit were you born with it or did it develop from cheat lifting and or bad posture? Do you have the S curve or the C curve? It can come right but it takes years of developing your core and lower back strenghth as well as stretching and twisting. Kinetics would help. It helped my brother in law!

I got a slight C curve, never had a problem with my back until a few weeks ago, I picked up constant lower back pain, so went for a x ray and that's the results. Doc said I must've been born with it and now that I'm so active at gym and do physical work its now become a problem

What is his long term recommendation? Meds and physio?
IMO you can still lift but light weight and high reps, its not like it will cripple you or end you up in a wheel chair. Good form, always note your form and pay attention to your posture. Pretend you have a light weight on your head and you have to keep it up all day, also suck your belly to your spine - improves posture significantly over a long period of time.
Things like squats etc must cause considerable pain for you. Stick with the exercises that offer back support.

If I ever had to stop lifting I would freak.

Yes lots of physio and dry needling and need to do my own stretches everyday, then the physio will track my progress and see how things develop, she did mention a back Brace if things don't come right within the required time, and yes I don't have a training partner unfortunately, so I'm always a lil sceptical about stuff like squats and deadlifts as I've never had someone watching my form and posture

I am interested in how your medical condition affects training as well as which exercises cause discomfort. Keep me updated please.

Hi Pyro,

before i started treatment basically any exercise caused discomfort as a nerve was been pinched due to the irregular curvature in my spine. I am currently on a pain killer,an anti inflammatory as well as medication called Lyrica which assists with Spinal cord nerve pain. i have however stopped all weight training and only do cardio (spinning) and swim,as well as my daily stretches. I still have discomfort in my vertebrae when doing any exercise which puts pressure on my lower back. i don't want to take any chances with this so ill only starting lifting again once i feel 110% ready

Howzit Garth

I have developed anterior pelvic tilt since I tore my lower L4 and L5 discs about 10 years back, at the time, my doc said to me I may never walk again and that I have DDD - degenerative disc disease, to this day I live by the rule of watching my lower back, which is why I cant squat for shit

But I have found that doing stretching helps a lot, in the morning when I get out of bed, I try touch the ceiling and that works for me

I wish you the best, if this is going to be a life long thing, take my advice, treat your back as if it was one of your kids, care for it every second of the day.

My cousin who is my age(35), had a spinal op and today he cant even walk properly, surgery should be your very last option

Dec 2015 (2 year goal) - 97kg, 6% body fat

Thanx bud, I'm working very hard to get it sorted, going for my regular physio sessions as well as doing my daily stretches, unfortunately the recovery process is a marathon and not a sprint, so I need to be very patient

Yes making progress bud, done with physio for awhile now, just been doing my daily stretches and cardio, either spinning or swimming - must give it a few weeks now and then go back for another xray to see how it's going

Thanks for the update and have some karma for climbing the mountain instead of going around it. My brother in law is perfect today and lifting heavy. I will say that on top of his kinetics he added in good morning every 3rd day. Not weighted at first, 4x20 reps and as he got to feeling better he would move up 5kg at a time, also he would do abs superset with good mornings. Seemed to be a good combination abs and lower back together

Thanx bud, will keep that in mind, always looking for anything that can help with the process, as I can't wait to start lifting again
