Toyota hilux was created by smally99
hi
so I'm planning to save up some money for a hilux bakkie hopefully by mid next year sometime.. single cab with the small space behind the seats..
I would just like to know what's the best option..
how's the consumption on the diesel and the petrol, I'm sure diesel is more easy on the pocket as this will be my daily car mostly for work(delivering) and the monthly fishing trip..
so for those who had the diesel and for those who had petrol.. which is better in your opinion.?
and kilo wise Howmuch per tank will I be getting on diesel and petrol?

and how about the izuzu? good bakkie compared to hilux?
thanks..

Hi Smally,

I'm taking ownership of a 2013 Hilux S/C 3.0 D4D in december hopefully :P current fuel consumption is 10.8km per litre while being driven decently as an everyday car as well.

Not sure what the petrol's consumption is like but can only imagine that 2.7 VVT-I will be more thirsty!

tank is 80l so +- 850km per tank.

Good luck :)

tanx for the response..
Howmuch you paying if you don't mind me asking..all garages have diff. prices on diff. kilos.. you getting brand new?
and does you future s/c have that extra back space so I can fit a dog in(I see lots people do that).. I'll need to fit my golf clubs or another person in there lol and some luggage from time to time..
if your one not going to have that extra space no need to respond on the price..
thanks my fellow BB..

I was born on the back of a Hilux bakkie and Toyota was probably the first word I said.

Earlier in the year I was also in the market for a Hilux Xtra Cab 3.0L 4x4, however after looking at the Ford Ranger Super Cab 3.2L it became clear that the Ford was a much better deal for me at the time.

The Toyota 3.0 D4D engine is pretty old tech now, but it's still a very capable engine, The Ford Duratorq 3.2L is a very powerful engine, but I find that it lacks power at high rpm and fuel consumption is a little more than the Toyota. The Ford engine also had turbo problems at higher altitudes, but a software update fixed this, however some guys noticed a drop in power after the update, I don't know if the software for mine has been updated yet. The earlier Rangers with automatic gearboxes also had the catastrophic issue with the water pipe that used to burst destroying both the engine and gearbox, however these vehicles had their engines and gearboxes replaced under warranty and there is a new pipe that don't fail as often. The Toyota engine is very reliable and I've never had a single problem after 110000km in a D4D so far. The old Toyota Stallion 2.4L diesel we used on the farm was sold earlier this year for R15k after it did nearly 700,000km on it's factory engine, only the diesel pump was replaced. The guy in township that bought it totally overhauled it and it's still going strong on that very same engine, show me another brand of bakkie that can match that? It's not 700,000km on a tar road either, it's 700,000km on the shittiest roads you can imagine and it wasn't even serviced as often as we should have.

The towing capabilities of the Ranger is far superior compared to the Hilux, but most Toyota's suck at this anyway. The Ranger's engine has plenty of torque ( below 2900 rpm ) and I often find it to be too much, for example when driving on corrugated gravel roads it's almost un-drivable and it's painful how often the traction control kicks in making a god awful sound. I also hate the wheel-spin, because my tires are fokken expensive.

The main issue I had with the Hilux Xtra Cab was that you didn't get it in automatic. My Ranger is a 6-speed automatic and it's an ok gearbox, but it's often hunting for gears and the 4-speed automatic used in the Fortuner would have been perfect for the Hilux 3.0, it's a very smooth gearbox and it drives very well. Please don't let anyone tell you that more gears are better, that person is a fool and doesn't understand what makes a good gearbox. The Ranger does have more off-road features like "Grade Control Logic", but I've not yet had the chance to test them. I do enjoy the "on-the-fly" change to 4x4 in the Ranger as I always get stuck in a fuckup trying to get the Hilux into 4x4 using that old transfer gearbox lever.

The interior build quality of the Ford is good and I don't hear nearly as many rattles as with the Hilux. The Ranger is also a more comfortable ride. Ford does cut costs by not painting the engine block for example, but other than the cosmetics it makes no difference. The Hilux body is tougher, but just a little, it's still shit compared to the old Hiluxes from the 80's.

I'm sure you will have many happy years with a Hilux, but don't forget about the competition like Ford, Isuzu and even VW. The days where Toyota were king of the hill is coming to an end.

BTW: I wanted to look at the new Isuzu as well, but my local dealer sucks so for that reason I didn't bother.

tanx admin.. answeres alot of my un -asked questions lol..I did hear the rangers ride is like a car compared to a hilux.. the main purpose will be for loading heavy goods for my new business.. my car is taking a strain and can feel the shocks messing up quicker then usuall and I just replaced them few months ago.. I do loading and off loading Atleast 4 times a week.. reason I want the single cab with the small back space is for my luggage etc. when I go places and I have no interest in towing because the back of the single cab will be enough for me..
I just seen one on Gumtree earlier for about if I remember correctly for about 180 000 for the d4d 3L at 95000 km.. 2013.. Gona copy you novice lol.. I don't know much about izuzu and vw..I know vw are good bakkies but I'll stick to Toyota..
just few more months of working hard and saving hard then can have my all-rounder bakkie hopefully..
tanx for clearing it up for me admin of all aspects..
I won't even be doing hardcore off roading.. just occasional game drives and occasionally fishing and some long distance travelling every now and then..
thanks.. some of my home-work done!!

The Hilux will serve you well, but you should still take good care of it with scheduled services. The D4D should be serviced every 10000km and the Ranger every 15000km, so take that into account as well. I believe common rail direct fuel injection engines don't like dirty oil at all.

I also like the Xtra Cab / Super Cab bakkies, because you have space for luggage, but still have enough loading space on the back. The Hilux doesn't have small doors for the Xtra Cab, but the Ranger does if that is of any importance to you.

I use my Ranger for fishing trips as well, but I tow an off-road trailer and I like to go to the middle of nowhere so towing abilities and 4x4 are really important to me.

tanx..I have a few family members in the car business so will see what prices will be like.. always nice to know you have the choice to do some crazy off-roading even if the intention is not there lol.. I can take one out on finance but I personally don't believe in that.. rather buy it cash/bank transfer when I know I can afford it.. will just be doing more home work on the 2 as I like the styling of the ranger and the Toyota is better value for money I think..but can't put a price on comfort .. tanx for all the quick responses..

If you need any more info, just shoot. I will give you my honest opinion and I'm not brand loyal.

It's always better to buy cash and I like your way of reasoning.

hi
so I've been looking at the izuzu kb (08-'10) models.. decent pricing and was told it is abit refined and comfort is quiet good, but the guy that told me never owned one, any idea as to how true this is?

I was also looking at the navara(2.5 dci) but the same guy has one and said it was a problem bakkie after150 000km.. is it a problematic bakkie or just his bad luck?

and what's your guys thoughts on the mitsibishi triton? I can't get proper info. about it from anyone..

My old man has a FJ Cruiser that he uses for overlanding, very good vehicle for that purpose and it looks really good with all the 4x4 accessories and raised suspension...

Look they are awesome vehicles when it comes to everything from comfort to off road...
Pulling the roof off gives you that holiday feeling. I really do like it....

Not sure what maintenance is like though so just check up on that first.
