Hey.. anyone have any advice for a slipped disk. I was doing dead lifts a few weeks back.. I have been to the chiropractic, and had some comfort, but every morning it's back and back with vengeance.. Hyper extensions? I really am over surgical procedures for awhile ..

Hey Bud I had a seriously herniated disk. After millions of trips to the Chiro I gave up and went to a Neuro for an MRI and was told that the Chiro visits had done more harm than good so be very carefull with Chiro's and spine issues.
I ended up having a full recovery with just time and avoiding and stress on that disc, l no it's not what you want to hear but the only way to truly see how bad the disc is and wether it herniated or degenerating is to see a neurosurgeon and have an MRI.

Mine was C5/C6 so luckily could still train other than Squats/Deads or any trap excersises but if yours is in the lumbar area Id just have an MRI if I was you and hear from a surgeon how best to recover and protect it. A really good one is DR Ouma at the Donald gordan

Use a hot water bottle and ice pack, keep each one on for a few minutes before switching to the other. Another thing that works even though pretty old school is to hang weights of the edge of the bed effectively pulling your legs and relieving all pressure from vertebrae.

Some anti inflammation meds and muscle relaxants.

My dad healed a severely herniated disk by doing this. After countless doctors told him that he would need surgery.

Theres also some exercise to do but can remember exactly what il ask and find out.

It's best to have an MRI first and then take it with you to the Neuro, otherwise your first appointments a waist because he'll just end up sending you for one and then you'll have to go back for another appointment for the diagnosis.

Most herniations will heal just fine with enough rest. An MRI would always be best but a few thousand bucks I reckon it's more than likely unnecessary. If your disk was really badly herniated or protruding you would be complaining a lot more than you are and you wouldn't be able to sit up in the morning. I messed up my back at l5/s1 and it took over 2 months with no squats, leg press, deadlifts, rows to heal around 90%.

Ja you right.. it comes in phases, I think with the dead lifts last week, super light, I was compensating weight with resistance, and as I came up to flex, I felt and heard this nasty sound in my intercostal muscles.. so now I can nearly breath, hehe. Got to love it when you start falling apart

Sorry to hear about your injury Pump. I have had issues with similar injury in passing years maxing out on my squats or deadlifts in less favourable conditions, the errors of youth :)

0. Get an assesment of your back, scans in order to establish the extent of the injury
1. Rest, avoid any pain or pressure to the region
2. Diclofenac, tablets or even better the injection
3. In terms of training, once your back is in good form, I swear by Good Mornings, if I am consistent with them then I no longer have the pain or discomfot I used to post heavy squat or deadlift day.
4. Train if you can however ensure that you avoid movements that are going to strain your back or impair your ability to heal. Ensure your back is well supported during this period even if it means machine circuit, your recovery and back are far more important than missing out on a few months of heavy lifitng.

Please feel free to let me know if there is anything I can better clarify. Wishing you well in your recovery.

Thanks bro.. some good advice there.. Ye, once you have done the damage it's always there, I like the idea of the good morning. . Keep the area stretched and build up some muscle around it.

Right.. I'm struggling with this, I really am. I struggle to get up when lying down. I'm in pain 30 percent of the day, and it would be more but I just lie down when ever I have free time.. Should I try a strong pain killer to give me mobility and hope this loosens things up ?

Hey Bro. . I've had to completely stop gym, it's a tiny bit better, but on most days it becomes severe again.. going away to surf.. after that I'll look to see if I need surgery..

Thanks for checking up

Before you go under the knife.

Try going to a registered biokineticist.
I know, wtf can they teach us, right?

Seriously though, I'm going to one from wits, who also does sports massage.
She picked up issues in my posture and muscle imbalance in my hips.
Them and certain physios are trained to pickup these thingS and help correct then.

And no, I'm not juggling dumbells while balanced on a ball.
But it is helping.
My posture is improving and I'm having less issues with my back.

Maybe scope one out and give it a run for a couple of sessions.
even if you do juggle on a ball, it's better than surgery.

But, I think the massage hurts just as much.

I had/have a severely bulged disk in my lower back, rest was pretty much key to my recovery. I rested for about 3 months from any form of strenuous training, my days were spent lying down or standing up - sitting will only make it worse. Ice baths followed by heat packs are also a good idea, get your whole lower body in there and obviously your back. Sleep on your back with two pillows under your knees, your back will then flatten completely against the bed even when you relax, its uncomfortable for a while but you get used to it.

Most importantly - WORK YOUR CORE. If your core is weak then your back will never get better by itself. See a biokineticist (as mentioned in a previous post by Oupiel) and get a core program from him/her if you want a professional opinion. Or just google a few exercises but sometimes a professional opinion is a good way to go and you can be more sure that you aren't doing any more damage to yourself.
