Garmin's Nuvi Recall was created by admin

GPS company Garmin has recalled 1.25 million units due to faulty batteries. The company has found bad batteries in some of their Nuvi line of units which could be fire hazardous.

The manufacturer of the batteries has not been disclosed. The batteries when used in some specific PCB design overheated.

Out of the 1.25 million units recalled, 800,000 were from US.

Faulty Nuvi model numebers are 200W, 250W, 260W, 7xx and 7xxT (where xx is a two-digit number). Overheating was found in only 10 instances. To check if your device is affected, visit www.garmin.com/nuvibatterypcbrecall

Garmin has said "None of the reported incidents has caused significant property damage and no injuries have occurred,".

As usual I'm one of the unlucky bastards to have one of these. Glad they will replace the battery though.

Just for those wondering what happened regarding this. Garmin replaced my Nuvi yesterday with a brand new one and also gave a free upgrade to the new maps coming later this year.

I think that is very good customer service and I would like to know what this is costing them to replace 1.2 Million GPS units... they really take customer satisfaction seriously.

My iPhone use google maps, but there's no voice navigation by default. The main problem for me with the iPhone GPS is that you need internet, so that the maps can download while you drive... I'm sure Apple/Google didn't think about the poor fools that go to the Kalahari. I can see it now how a couple of lost Americans are standing on the dunes looking for a 3G connection...

EDIT: Also the Google maps are no match for Garmap, the Garmap is far superior in every way... it's not free though.

Hmm, I use Brutt, it is hacked google navigation that you can install and have voice in South Africa. I have read an article that also states you will soon be able to use 'markers' speed cameras, etc from other solutions and install it for google to take effect. Google is also putting the traffic alert, so you can zoom out and see what is install for you along your journey, i think this is already in place in the states.

I wanted to install Garmap however trying to get hold of those guys and finding if it works on Android is next to impossible. I think it does on 2.2, however I'm waiting for Sony Ericsson to release the 2.2 upgrade this quater (I believe this month)

If I can get Garmap I'll install it as I like to have the cameras, specially since the point system started on the 31st of August. :P

I just had a look at Google Maps and it seems they recently improved it allot and the detail is pretty close to that of Garmap.

The speed cameras are pretty annoying and I also just finished installing the latest camera alerts...

Yes, what is also nice, is street view is also active, so I can switch to that while navigating. (takes time due to speed of 3G)

Also they have added Walking navigation.

They still missing ability to save your location (favorites), however it does save recent destination. I like their search function, as you can just type, you don't need to get the order right, I can mix and match suburb / street name, etc. Also the voice navigation, eg: I can just speak to the phone saying, rugby stadium in Durban close to XYZ.

Check this video on this page... They going to be a force be to be reckoned me with soon, seeing they don't charge.

I had a quick look at a Tom Tom when they first came out a few years ago and from the outside the Garmin looked much better quality. However I never got the chance to compare the mapping software and functionality.

In Europe TomTom's mapping is way better than Garmin. Over here more or less the same. I have a TomTom one v4 and it's top notch. Installed latest maps and speed cameras recently. Obviously hacked/cracked. I am not gonna pay for those maps, too expensive.

From my personal experience, I find Garmin better. I had Garmap on my Blackberry and I have a TomTom in my car, I have updates maps on the TomTom (which I have to pay for yearly) I took a drive from Sandton -> Pretoria and the TomTom had a much smaller camera database.

With the points system in place I would use something with a more accurate camera database. Then again, Pigspotter is pretty on the money :D

I have two sets of camera maps/databases. One is TomTom and another is developed by someone else. So where TomTom's doesn't show the other one does. Ek's gewax my bra.

TomTom is crap. I have one.. Also you have to pay for it's safety cameras which are not accurate and missing some cameras (as I experienced on my way to the coast a week ago).

I think google has the _BEST_ maps, they honestly are amazing however we have to get a hacked version and we don't have cameras with it just yet.

See if you can dig up a version for iPhone (no idea if it exists / Brutt navigation for iPhone). When you navigate with it you will understand what I mean, depending on the speed you driving it will zoom in and out.

It also has a 'caching' option to store map info of routes that have already been navigated

Thanks for the info pump!

Let me give some background to my situation... I have a GPS device build into my car stereo and it runs WinCE 6 as part of the navigation system.

Now it comes with iGO pre-installed, but the maps are crap even-though the software is pretty good.

I want to replace the default software to something better supported in SA, so my options are:

iGO, TomTom Navigator 7, Sygic and a hacked version of Garmin XT.

Like I said the iGO is a no-go because of the map. The TomTom software is pretty good, but you don't sound too happy about the maps. Sygic is capable of running a modified garmin map and in SA it's known as Garmap Drive... problem is that the Sygic software is the worst crap I've ever seen and routes are often 200km+ longer than those calculated by other systems. The best software by far is the Garmin XT program, but the catch is that it's a Windows Mobile only program and doesn't work on WinCE. Some cleaver chinese okes managed to port it to WinCE though, but in the process many bugs were introduced.

Oh, going to search for Google GPS software that will run on WinCE... Hopefully I can find something that will run without requiring internet.

I actually got the tomtom software on the unit and the maps are pretty good. However the software freeze after some driving. I'm now looking at the garmin software again.

I hate anything with windows on it, always amazing how unreliable the software is.
