Unichip on my new car was created by spike
I finally settled for the car I want and got a Mitsubishi Outlander, 2005 model 2.4 petrol, automatic, all wheel drive. Main reason for getting this out of the previous list was the deal that came up and the great price I got.

So having driven it for a few weeks, I completely love it. Only problem I have is the fuel consumption, in the region of 14l/100km. So having done a bit of research I figure my only option is to consider the unichip. I figured after 6 years the car will have lost a fair amount of its original claimed 120kw and as such a retune with a piggyback chip could only help. The marketing for such a device is quite convincing, mainly focusing on the fact that every engine comes of the line unique, but is plugged into an identical management system that is designed to run the 'ideal'. Coupled with my own thinking that 6 years and 150 00km would certainly change the engine, a retune seemed perfect.

For the job i chose Steves Auto Clinic in Durban, mainly because they were the only place i found with a 4 wheel dyno, they gave a good quote, and I find security in a nationwide franchise. Total cost for the chip and a minor service was R3800. i think the chip was in the region of R3200 installed. Surprisingly the best quote I got, considering the number of complaints of overcharging i'd her regards them. The service also came in well under their original estimate.

The car was with them for the day, and i was sooo lucky enough to swap them for a courtesy citi golf for the duration, at R100 extra.

So attached is the dyno tune results for before and after the chip... Im rather happy with it, especially those torque figures. Shows why the car was guzzling, it had lost a huge amount of its original projected power figure. All in all an improvement over 10% and i can feel that when i drive it. The final test will come in terms of the fuel bill once i work it out, but im confidant this'll help. Cost wise, a 1l/100km improvement will pay for the chip in 12 months. Incidentally the exhaust wizard there informed me that another easy 10% all round could be had with the wildcat branch and system.

Take a look and see what you think

Tho come to think of it, the avg power outputs for a normally aspirated 2.4l 4 cyl are anywhere between 100 and 130kw. So for a six year old car it aint shabby

Yeah well that little clio is a machine, and specifically designed for max power.

A turbo car is always fun to improve on, you can get such different power figures with bigger coolers or higher boost. Do it, a bit of change to keep you guessing :)

spike, that is a rather impressive improvement and everyone I've spoken to about Unichip is very happy.

I think that was money well spent.

Thanks admin. My sentiments exactly. 10kw and 33Nm for R3200 is a bargain in my books. The change in that low end torque is fantastic

I don't trust ANY dyno that does a chip, fan on, fan off, so many ways they crook it to make yourself look good, i'm part of a car club and we all have powered up cars and trust me the dyno days we go to never looks like the results we get from the guys that put the chip in... You car will lose 0 power over time, that is not possible, disconnect your battery and re-connect it and the ECU will re-correct itself or just plugging it in at the dealer and resetting the ECA (same thing)... The chip will help to a degree, but unless you have something like a vtec or a turbo and you can actually control its engagement point you wont be getting much from the chip. Also I'm suprised about the torque as the chip shouldn't engage until a certain 'RPM', that is why with our cars we use Hondata which actually has a second ECA and then we can control a whole lot more and get clearer lines, no power dip, etc.

If your car is 'older' then probably the cats are causing the 'lack of power and eating of petrol', take that out and put a mini cat in, that is where I went from burining fuel to now being able to get just over 1000km on a 60l tank (high way with cruze control and in 6th gear) however town driving 600/700 (if I drive extremely well)km per tank.. Which is very good..

However bang for your buck the UniQ is probably the most cost effective way.. The nice thing with the UniQ + you can clip it out and you can also set it for Turbo cars where you can have different speeds. without our Hondata I can however set a mode that when someone takes me car for a drive it will only rev to 5000rpm and limit out at X speed, etc, just plug in with your laptop.

Check if it helps spike or check to see if you can get your cats removed, maybe you don't even need a minicat, however some sensors don't like not having a car and your engine light stays on constantly, but the cat 'fooler' will correct this.

I did consider the decat, of course the wildcat freeflow system will include this but at a total of over 6k its just not worth it. Another shop reckoned they could remove the cat no prob, i just didnt use them as they didnt have a 4 wheel dyno

Will continue looking into the decat and see what gives. at the end of the day the fuel consumption figures will show me the difference if any

Decat shouldn't cost you more than about R500, remeeber the cat itself is worth money its platinum

I love turbo cars , i got my Seat leon Cupra about 3 years ago , standard it is about 177 kw , after i chiped it , induction kit , new exhaust dump valve , it pushed 215 kw , since then i did the water methabol injection , so it is def higher than 215 now (just havent checked it yet) and fuel consumption is actually exactly the same , wich is not too bad considering everything i have done ( would like to put bigger injectors aswell , but than fuel is gonna be BAD !!!!!!)

My buddy has the New Golf R. He is also the dealer for REVO software in Gauteng. He remapped his car after 600kms . He is making good power with stage one in his R. His previous G5 gti was basically an S3 in a GTi body. That car would haul ass.

Well i did a fuel consumption test earlier this week, mainly freeway driving, with a full car... Got 11.4 l/100km. Not bad considering the previous owner told me his best was 13
