Hunting Rifle- Which one ? was created by Pumped
Hey guys I have recently been wanting to purchase a hunting rifle, as I hunt almost every year on freinds and familys farms .I am an active member of a hunting club and have just completed my DH(Dedicated Hunters) course. The rifle which I have in mind is a browning x-bolt composite stalker in 300 win mag. The rifle weighs empty 7lbs and has a 26' barrell which is free floating with a 1-10 right hand twist ratio. The rewiews on the internet are very promising for this rifle. The rifle also has a feather trigger that is fully adjustable. The rifle costs around R15 000 .

Now my only question is this is a 300 win mag overkill for most game animals. and if so what other calibres would do the job. Anything from a blesbuck to an Eland.

Thanks guys.

You can shoot from springbok to eland... it's a nice all rounder.

The make is a Musgrave. I think it's currently setup for Federal Ammunition 180gr, but there's boxes of Remington 200gr and PMP 180gr in the safe as well.

What do you think about Federal ammunition. How good is it say compared to pmp .
I really like using Hornady ammo when i hunt ,their controlled expansion bullets are exellent at putting animals down. The grain of the ammo is important I read an article by chuck Hawks I think and he said that heavier grain bullets should be used with magnum cartridges due to the barrel wear of light(eg. 150 grain bullets @3300 ftps) fast bullets. The heavier the bullet the less barrel wear and the more knockdown power. I think that a 180 grain hornady SST bullet leaves the muzzle at around 2950 ftps in a 26' barrel. Now thats what I call knockdown power.

i've always used pmp.. loyal i guess :P in my 303 i use 170-180 grain, cant remember exactly, exits at 2000-2500fps? and that thing has dropped over 3000 animals, was my fathers rifle when he worked parks port, so the caliber is tried and tested.. works like a treat on heavier game as well as light.. i've used a .300 H&H and it was such a pleasure to shoot, so anything in that caliber and you are sorted for most game..

Ja well if a 303 can put them down then a 300 win mag with it's faster muzzle velocity (being a magnum) and increased energy and case capacity will put animals down. The thing I'm concerned about is the amount of meat damage caused by a 180 grain 30 cal bullet traveling at around 2950 ftps.

Hi you can use a 308 i have one will put any antelope down from spring buck to eland and wildebeest. The other option is a 270 with a higher bullet velocity, the 300 is a very good allrounder use the right ammo points and grain, and it wont damage to much thnx.

Captin : we need to access weight we going down !

I have used a 308 before and it will take down anything but the only problem with a 308 is it's lower muzle velocity(Due to it's smaller case capsity than a 300 win mag) when shooting heavy bullets 180 grain for example. The 300 win mag will shoot a heavier bullet with more velocity than a 308 and this could come in handy when you want to drop something at 300 and 400 meters.

Agree was shooting springbuck teiken on 300 m and the 150grain dropped over half a meter, so long range the 300 better choice thnx.

I personally prefer the .308win but am also very fond of the .270win. Only thing with the 270 is that it can make a real mess sumtimes. I have loads of PW Botha's ammo which I use in my 308. Being mass produced the grouping is mostly inconsistent but not that much as long as they come from the same batch.

Last year I sold my 270 for R30 000. Was an engraved sako deluxe from the 60's.
I will take down an elephant bull with my .308. Her and me work wonders together. Lmao

I would go for a remington model 700 in .300 win mag caliber.
model 700 is the most accurate rifle out of the box.

Add a nice leopold scope and one of those synthetic stocks with the thumbhole that they make for model 700, and there you have a weapon of mass destruction.

If you want to go futher I strongly suggest handloading your own ammo, sice those in the shops are not made to snugly fit in your chamber.

I was thinking about getting a remmington Scendero 2 in 300 win mag. But the price is a little too much for me and the browning x-bolt is recieving good reviews and it's accurate enough for me and the price is right as well.

Does anyone here have a tactical scope on their rifle with mill dots and turrets for wind-age and elevation adjustments.
