Choosing an SUV

Hi Guys,

I am a bit indecisive my family has now grown and my Bmw is to small for us. I have a 3 series and am now looking at buying an SUV.
Any suggestions on good value for money, stylish, good resale value.
I have around R400K to spend and so far the Fortuner 4*4 seems to be my choice, any suggestions? Chevrolet Captiva also looks quite good.

What's the price of the new vw toureg? DO NOT BUY A HUUMER!!lol...remember to look if you get a full service and maintaince plan like u do with audi's,BMW's,merc's etc,brother in law is going through this process of buying a new vehicle... Look at the volvo xc90 as they also come with a 5 year full service and maintaince plan if I am not mistaken...I might be out the park with price with my suggestions,if so I am sorry

Fortuner you can't go wrong...

Touareg is AWESOME, I love it a bit to steep for me though R580K. Fortuner comes with a service plan up to 90 000km, friend of mine has a Hilux D4D up to 75000km now has not spent a cent except on tyres.
KIA Sportage also looks good but its a KIA, thats all I keep thinking

Have got a Fortuner D4D, no complaints at all, going as good as new after 60k. There should be a facelifted model arriving early next year.

I also drive a Fortuner D4D and really happy, so I'm with 00pump and DMZ. The new model is coming out later this year though, so if you go for a Fortuner you might want to wait a little. The new one will have some pretty extensive exterior and interior changes, so I'm a little jealous.

Fortuner is a great buy, Kia looks good as does the Hyundai.

I had the same issues over the Kia but their quality is bloody good these days since bringing in the ex design chief from Audi.

A client of mine has just bought the Hyundai and loves it, again quality is great.

If all compare fairly closely on price, warranty, servicing and resale then go with your best looking one.

Just to throw it out there saw an awesome G Wagon at Mercedes today, but I can imagine that is a ridiculous price!

i dont see how u can choose a captiva above an ix35.its better in nothing.
what about adding a bit and buy a 2nd hand cayenne.i love them! volvos are great but depreciate insanely

Ok, lets look at your criteria.

Good value for money: Fortuner, for under R400k there are very few competitors that can provide the same value for that amount.
Stylish: Fortuner and there is a new shape coming this summer. Don't let the light leather put you off, it looks very nice. Might want to invest in seat covers if you have small ones...
Good resale value: Only a toyota has good resale value.
Around R400K: Fortuner
4x4: Fortuner, great ground clearance, thousands of accessories on the market, good fuel consumption (I get 11.2km/L). Diff lock is already fitted. Big tires and suspension are easily modifiable.
Chevrolet Captiva: No way

I'm very based toward Toyota though and the others never impressed me much when I had to make the decision you are doing now. I will buy a Fortuner again as I'm really happy. The ride quality and seat positioning are extremely comfortable and driving a 1000km doesn't make you sore at all. I spent my entire holidays exploring every road I can find and it's the first car where I'm not looking for an excuse to drive long distances. The D4D engine is also powerful enough to make driving mountain passes a pleasure and you never have to worry about lack of power when overtaking other cars.

Fortuner seems the way to go, are the changes on the newer model that drastic as im getting a great deal on this model 4*4 including tow bar,pdc r400000. And they will settle my bmw which is owing R146000 and trade is R120000 should I wait and pay like R450000 just for q facelifted model or is it a complete new shape?

From what I've heard is that the changes are pretty drastic to the new model. Will see if I can find some info for you.

Ok, the changes are pretty dramatic and I think you should wait for the new one. However the current model is going to be sold at a discounted price soon. Just confirm the new model's price with your dealer as I think the 4x4 3.0D4D will be over R400k if you are looking at the auto.

Yes, that's what I would do. If you buy the current model your trade in value will be considerably less than the new shape even if it's only a month newer.

Hrm not sure if I like the facelift, maybe it will grow on me

the current shape fortuner are going for a discount already. got some emails. think they want R350 odd. check in the autotrader. these r new vehicles.

the audi Q3 wil be out end of this year as well. seems nice.

wat bm do u have . model milage etc. might know someone looking for a car.

The petrol V6 is awesome but well over his R400k budget and fuel consumption is shocking. The diesel is kak.

So I ordered my new Fortuner today Only comes in September though

Koe, check out what the risk value is of the fortuner and Toyota double cab first. I heard nowadays the tracking companies put in two tracking units in those cars because they are very high risk cars. reason for this is the chassis fits a Toyota taxi 100% and the highjackers target those cars like candy.

Heard of this from a couple of ppl including ppl working in the motor and insurance industry.

My personal view is a SUV is rather small for packing space, the kids don’t take up that much space its all the luggage and toys that go with...for this reason i think a double cab is probably a better option because you have more space for the packing...just my 2$
