I agree pump. I find the Jays midsection is to wide, his obliques seem out of proportion....almost looks like he has love handles, haha, rock hard love handles but still... :P

STUARTF, ye I was thinking yesterday most of the times the guys just grow to big, that is what happend to Ronnie, you start to get deformed look, it isn't that sleek look that Phil holds, he is going to win this show for more than a couple of years now... I find the same is true with Branch, ye, he is amazing, but he doesn't touch Phil...

That mid section is functional. Small looks better but realistically shouldnt be. Like breeding a stump nose onto a Persian Cat - they never had it and just shouldn't be.

GH gut =/= functional abdominal strength. There's a huge difference between Jay and Mariusz Pudzianowski

Sorry guys Apparently it is true, cause its happened to certain people already, so I’m not taking any chances !!

When Jay was down in SA, I noticed that Jay doesn't have the GH belly, but his waist is just wide

Well look at the size of his back, eventually after dead lifts and that much mootie, your mid section will widen.. I think there is a fine line between to much... Phil is PERFECT now...

Well the athletes were told to come in with smaller midsections ( less of a bloated look) from now on , so as far as I know a few of them have changed their diets drastically.

So im looking forward to the next Mr O to see what these boys bring to the table.

Dorian Yates gives an awesome tip on keeping ur midsection small throughout ur competitive days - basically avoid using aditional weight when training ur mid. I can see it being true, or would u disagree?

If you have been following Jay the last couple of years you also would know how he didnt even use a belt on heavy squats etc. That == functional. No matter which way you look at it your mid section WILL grow the heavier you lift. Use a belt to keep it small. Just dont lift without one all of a sudden - you will hurt yourself.
Your core has to be strong not to use a belt on heavy lifts.

On top of that - Jay uses weight in all his Ab workouts - or at least he used to. That gives size just like any other muscle. Many guys NEVER use direct weight specifically to keep the size down. Theory is that you get enough size indirectly and you use ab exercises to sharpen the muscle.

Not the biggest Jay follower, surprised he doesn't use a belt thought he's part of the new breed of bodybuilders who only "leg press then squat in the smith with a belt", I'm pleasantly surprised. And cant agree more with you w.r.t. ab training thats also my approach, cant see why most people can understand that its also like any other muscle in your body

Dont know hey? Not so clear cut for me whom takes it in that pic. It depends on the flavour of the month i guess. If you looking for full muscular overall size then i ould lean towards Jay. If you want to get more nostalgic and look for size but still want the classical leaner midsection and a bit more athletic defined muscularity then i would lean towards Phil. For the past few years i guess bigger was better but now things change again. Phil is a legend though.

This is a pure objective view from someone that does not do bb as sport so i might be missing the pot totally
