Cars was created by jakes
I'm looking to buy a new car. I only have a few months of payments left then I want to let this one go and get something new.
I blew a gasket yesterday which is setting me back a few 1000, my own stupidity I know. Luckily I have cash on hand to use (it would have gone out on steroids :()

I've looked at a few cars, my top 3 options are:
1)A new bmw 320i (same one I have just the new model)
2)Toyota hilux (the 3L)
3)The audi A4 quatro 2.0T

I can't complain about the performance of the car I had, drove like a dream and had enough speed (not the type of guy who wants to do 300kmh). The fuel efficiency was okay, got about 100km on 7l

What do you guys think?

I'm not a merc fan because I don't like the headlights, the bmw is a good option, what year models are you looking at?

I don't want to buy the Audi second hand, or any other turbocharged car for that matter. People drive the shit out of them bro... And nobody wants a car that will cause problems so look at the normal 2l version or maybe the 3.2. If you want the 1.8t or 2.0t buy it new... The audi's have great performance

I don't want to send the topic in the wrong direction, but German cars and especially those owned by VW like Audi, VW and Porsche have to many damn options/accessories.

The base models look so attractive, but once you start adding the things you want the price shoots up and then it's not so nice anymore. I first wanted to buy a Porsche Cayenne, but after all the extras I decided to look at the Audi Q7, but again after the extra's I decided to go for a Toyota, because at least I get a proper spare tyre and not a stupid bicycle rim that will set you back R12k if you want a standard size instead. Not to mention the R2k extra just to have your Porsche logo in color instead of black and white.

Im not so sure about the Cayenne. Friend bought one couple of months ago and he seems to not really talk about it. Knowing him he likes to talk about stuff like this but it seems he avoids the subject. Probably ashamed of the expensive mistake he has made. Reckon he will trade it on a panamera soon anyway. Must be nice.....

@ABC01, yeah... luckily I realized it's a mistake...

The thing that attracted me was the engine they use for the diesel Cayenne and Q7, but now that Nissan has a V6 turbo diesel as well there's a much better and cheaper option in the new Navara and Pathfinder. Just waiting for Toyota to wake-up and upgrade their diesel D4D to a 3.0L V6. I think the earthquake they had in Japan last year delayed their progress allot, however Nissan seem to be more up to date with engine development.

EDIT: Oh yeah, the gearboxes in automatic Toyota's are very dated and they should adopt new technology quickly.

The german cars does have nice electronic gadgets, but for the price of those cars I can manage without them. I do like the automatically adjustable cruise control in the Q7 and something I would like to have in my next car. It pisses me off it I set my cruise control for 120km/h on the highway and some ape jumps out in front of me at 118km/h, because then I have to adjust my settings so I don't drive into him. With the automatic one it senses the speed of the car in front and adjusts automatically until he moves out of your way again. It even does an emergency stop if it detects you are going to drive into a stationary object.

Buy low mileage pre-owned and let the first owner take the depreciation knock. If you go for a low mileage BMW it should still be covered by motorplan.

Thing is toyota is a great baki, I love the hilux... The problem is it just doesn't have that something "extra". When you see one you go "oh nice" its not like the audi or bmw where you actually look twice.

Porce is a little out of my price class. I don't want to buy the cheapest car in the range so I'll stay away from them. The toyota's extras also cause a substantial price increase if you look at the 3L and then at the 4x4 version for example. Your looking at around 430k for a "normal" car.

When you compare the bmw to the audi the bmw feels a little over priced. I love bmw myself, it was the first car I owned and never gave me any problems. The interior is nice, performance is good and the car looks fantastic. If you compare it to the 2.0T audi A4 or A5 the audi is better in my mind the. It just has that "feel". When you get in it you'll see what I mean. I love the interior and the performance is awesome. 100 in 7.3 seconds and It has 155kw compared the the bmw which has around 105ish kw. On physical appearance the bmw wins, the lines and overall look is fantastic. I actually wish the audi's looked more like the bmw's.

Another problem with a bakie is when you have one everyone wants to lend it om hulle kak mee rond te ry

But every single guy in Joburg has a GTI or a BMW 320 or 1 series or and Audi 1.8T, etc... No one in Joburg looks twice at a guy driving these cars.

But if you the type of guy that is prepared to keep trading in car after car and throwing money at something that keeps losing value, then ja, BMW has a nice maintenance plan, but you do not want this car out of warranty.

@00pump, that's true bro, that's why I said I won't buy it second hand. Luckily I don't stay in jhb, I don't dig the hatch back cars like the golf. Mostly arrogant little bastards that drive them lol, plus its 300k for a stupid car...

@kkkyle, I like the audi too bro, lol @ the arm comment. I don't like driving like that tho. Smash and grab/timted windows with 17 or 18" mags. That's how I roll

00pump also has a valid point. Why keep paying 7k monthly for a car? Cars like the kia picanto cost 100k or the kia rio which is around 135. The rio has bluetooth, electronic display, electric windows and mirrors etc and you can get 100km on like 6L. Buying that would mean paying basically nothing (depending on how much I get for the beamer as a trade in) and it will also have a full maintenance plan.
I just don't know if I can convince myself in buying a gay car like that

Jakes when my car went in to the panel shop, I got given a Honda Jazz automatic, but with triptronic too, man that car rocked, was so easy to drive, all the seats just folded up, didn't have to change gears in the traffic... My car is paid off, so I'm thinking of getting one of these gay cars for everyday driving, while I continue to build the black mamba.. But I'm over spending allot of cash on cars... Kia really is coming out with nice cars lately... Hmmm...

Hey Jakes, you cant really compare the 320i with the turbo'd audi...
I dont know on price but those cars are worlds apart.

Why dont you rather consider the 320d? Better drive and not that much more than the 320i. The 320i is really not a good buy, and I am seriously brand biased, have owned 4 bmw's.

You can buy a gay car...but I would advise not too. New is nice, but I still preferred to drive my 4cil E36 above my wifes new hyundai i20 1.6. And that counts for the other cheapies as well...there is more stuff here than what the stats say... Road noise for one, and general feel...german cars just feel better.

Why dont you look at cars thats done like 50k km? Then you still have motorplan and they are affordable(ish).

But I agree on BMW, Merc and audi just becoming to common in Joburg, Lexus as well. But there just isnt many other rear wheel drive replacements...

Just remember, buy what you want, if you come out of the shops, you want to own the car that catches your eye. B)

@ 00pump, what is the black mamba? Do share

Both the bmw 320 and audi are over 300k, it depends which audi you buy. If you buy the quatro which basically is the flagship of the A4 range you are looking at around 540k...

I don't know how you can say that bmw is not a good brand. Their cars are stylish and performance wise they aren't bad. The 3 range aren't sports cars like the M3. Parts are really expensive, there I won't argue but atleast the parts are available and I'm buying new so there will be a maintenance plan which helps.
Why do you say they aren't good cars?

The guy staying next to me has a hyundai i20 1.6. He paid around 160k when he bought it. Its a nice car with enough power but when you look at the features the less expensive kia rio wins hands down. It even has windows that controls temperature.

If I buy the kia however I'll have to keep hcg in the car because my balls will shrink and my test level will drop every time I get in

The Rio is new, only came out now while the i20 has been out for a while. It does look brilliant though, but there is no 1.6. And you are going to pay more for that 1.4 top of the range than you will pay for the i20, which has more power.

I recently drove a lot of rentals, B segment, and to add I would say if you are looking to buy in this segment, look at the corsa as well. I am not an opel fan but was impressed.

E46 >>>> these cars though. And you will still have a lot of money left for maintenance, which really isnt that bad. Its also got a lot more soul

Bmw e90 bud... The hyundai the guy has is about 2 or 3 years old. The rio is a 1400cc car yes where the hyundai is a 1600 but performance wise the kia is great. It has a 6 speed gearbox and all the features I have listed you get for 135k. I personally sat in the car when a guy drove 180... It doesn't feel if you are driving fast because the engine is dead quiet and so is the exhaust. If it didn't have that gayness factor I would buy it.

Not really an opel fan

(lekker aap smile wat jy daar gaan he elke keer as jy hom druk, priceless)

Maar as jy geld het vir n nuwe E90, go for it.

Probeer so 20minute lank rond ry met n kar.

Had an E90 323, power features galore great car bad thing was resale, Shocking. I got the New Fortuner and its an absolute pleasure. Got stupidover Christmas and bought a low mileage GTI. Now I know what the fuss is about, the car is freakin awesome, everything from heated seats, Xenons, Cruise Control, DSG and paddle shift. If I were you id go low mileage BMW as you won't get hit as bad, or the audi, you too young for a merc :)

00Pump in CPT i hired the Honda Jazz I was very impressed, 5.6l/100km city driving with aircon and very nippy.

I just took delivery of my 3rd golf 6 gti. After owning the scirocco and the new polo gti, the golf for me is excellent value for me money. Why three gtis? The first one was euro spec so no extras like auto headlights wipers etc as it was one of the first in the country. Traded that for a dsg scirocco. Hated dsg so traded it for a red gti. Hated red and the new 1.4 polo gti with twin charger seemed appealing so got that. That lasted for a month before I traded that coz at 108kilos and 2 meters polo aint a smart choice lol. Now I have another 6 gti and really love it. Oh and my arrogance has nothing to do with the gti but rather the amount of test I'm on

155 kw but they dyno at around 166kw on the flywheel. I've never done more than 240 with the previous one and even if I could it really struggles to go much more past that
