Hey what's the benefits of taking fish oils such as cod liver oil over flaxseed oils and vice versa?

What oils do you guys supplement with and why?

What would be the best oils to supplement with?

Thanks :)

Hey man, so in fish oils you get EPA and DHA (amoung other omega 3's) directly, in flax oil you get ALA that the body uses to make EPA and DHA. Otherwise fish oils, generally will have more than just omega'3s I think (I don't use, but I seem to remember Cod liver oil contains some vitamins and/or minerals too).
Also remember that alpha Linolenic acid is only obtained from plants. Funny enough thats why some fish have high levels of omega's in the first place - cause they consume so much algae!

Alternatively, eat sardines and chia :P

Hope it makes sense.

Hey kkkkkkkkyle! I have been adding extra virgin coconut oil to some of my meals after kooked and in my plate. It is a good way (acc to me) to up your cal with MCT's and it gives a pleasant taste to my food. It has numerous benefits. I see Ondier sells coconut oil for around R275 for 2L. Bloody good price!

I know this is off your question but just something i would like to toss in there :)

The following was ripped straight from t-nation.com

13. Flaxseed and Fish Oil both contain Omega-3s, but they're different. Flaxseed contains short chain Omega-3s (alpha linolenic acid) and fish oil contains long chain omega-3s (EPA and DHA). You can't just take one or the other. They both have beneficial properties separate of each other. For example alpha linolenic acid has been shown to reduce levels of C-Reactive Protein (a general marker of inflammation that's been correlated with risk of heart disease), but EPA and DHA do nothing to CRP.

So just use both to be sure you're not deficient

Asked DJ a while ago if I can use Flax seed oils instead of Fish Oils as an EFA. He said that flaxseed oils do not have the correct ratio of fatty acids and I should stick to fish oils.

All this being said, flax oil is still the superior plant oil. If you have to choose a plant oil to add, add flax. Unfortunatly it's by far the most expensive.

I think it's more to do with the fact that the fish have already processed the oil and is easier available to us as apposed to ingesting ALAs that we use.

I take it this is from your own flaxseed caps? The composition differs from product to product.

I find that omega 3 oils are best with some evening primrose oil to get a nice balance of essential fatty acids for your diet.3000mg daily is more than enough for the average person, if you are having joint issues then up your omega 3 intake to, 000mg daily to reduce inclination. I used a lot of omega 3 in koes contest peep this year and it really did show
