Modafinil aka Provigil was created by 333
Hey Guys,

On some days, I take 200mg of Provigil for it's cognitive enhancement capabilities, but have found it nothing short of equally incredible for workouts. Today I became the proud owner of William Llewellyn's Anabolic Steroids books (kindle edition available for $12 on amazon). To my surprise, he actually lists provigil in his book and was wondering anybody here takes it?

Here is a bit about Provigil from the book, for those who don't know it:

Modafinil, known chemically as benzhydrylsulphinylacetamide, is a central stimulant (psychostimulant). It is FDA approved for the treatment of narcolepsy (a disorder characterized by sudden and uncontrollable attacks of deep sleep, mental fatigue, or excessive sleepiness), sleep apnea, and SWSD (Shift Work Sleep Disorder). It is being investigated for a number of other uses, including the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and attention deficit disorder. Modafinil belongs to a group of drugs known as Eugeroics (“good arousal"), designed to promote a mental state of vigilance and alertness. One of its known mechanisms is to work as an alpha-1 adrenoceptor agonist, exerting its mood and energy enhancing effects through the increased release of dopamine in the CNS. It also results in alterations in local GABA and glutamate levels. The use of modafinil as a stimulant has been shown in studies to have many advantages over amphetamines. To begin with, it is believed to have a much lower potential for abuse due to the fact that it produces a lower sense of euphoria. It also displays lower peripheral CNS stimulation (less side effects), has minimal effects on blood pressure, produces no interruptions in normal sleeping patterns (no hangover or needing “catch-up” sleep), and has an overall greater safety profile according to clinical trials. This drug is of interest even to the U.S. military, which is looking at it as an energy enhancer for pilots and combat soldiers that need to operate for long periods of time without sleep. This is not as unusual as it may seem at first, as military combat pilots and soldiers have used Dexedrine (an amphetamine) extensively in the past when sleep was inconvenient. Soldiers on modafinil often report that they maintain excellent cognitive functioning for up to 40 hours without sleep, and have fewer side effects than Dexedrine. Modafinil has been tested in recent combat situations such as in Afghanistan and Iraq, and seems poised for official acceptance as a battlefield drug. Recently, modafinil has become a popular drug among competitive athletes. They use it not simply to “stay awake” but as a performance enhancing agent with both stimulant and endurance-increasing properties. This type of use probably comes as a surprise to those who developed this drug, as early reports suggested that this was a “mild” alertness drug, without strong stimulant properties that would improve athletic performance. Recent studies contradict this determination. A study conducted in Canada shows a very strong athletic benefit inherent in modafinil.687 During this double-blind investigation, a dose of 4 mg per kg of bodyweight (this equates to 200 mg for a 220lb man) of modafinil, or placebo, was given to a group of 15 male volunteers. Three hours after ingestion, aerobic exercise was conducted on a cycle ergometer at 85% V02max (maximum aerobic power), and the amount of time until exhaustion was determined. While taking modafinil, the men were able to exercise for significantly longer periods of time (~30%), and had greater oxygen intake at exertion. They also reported lower subjective ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), which suggests that the increased performance was in part due to a significantly less pronounced sensation of fatigue during exercise.

Very interesting!Wikipedia also states that several athletes including sprinters are using it as a performance enhancing agent. Being that it is a legitimate pharmaceutical can I ask how much it costs at the chemist?

Well, I have experimented with pretty much every nootropic out there (cognitive enhancers) AKA steroids for the brain. Provigil has been AWESOME! The chemist charges about R1100 per 30x100mg tabs. No idea on underground pricing, haven't been able to find a supplier. It is S5, which makes it very difficult to get a hold of.

Side effects - None...I have not experienced a single side effect. It's honestly the cleanest form of energy that I have ever experienced. The only thing to keep in mind is that it has a half-life of about 16 hours, so you have to take it first thing when you wake up if you want to fall asleep that night. I take them more for writing my assignments (part time student), but the workout benefit is unlike anything else that I have experienced, and I have tried a lot.

Fillet be careful of reading things like that. Study the side effects below then right at the bottom I am gonna tell you what the compound is. Dangerous stuff!

Less common or rare - with high doses
Diarrhea
dizziness or faintness (with the injection only)
flushing or redness of skin
headache
increase in urination (mild)
nausea or vomiting
stomach cramps

For Healthcare Professionals

Applies to ascorbic acid: compounding powder, injectable solution, oral capsule, oral gum, oral liquid, oral tablet, oral tablet chewable, oral tablet disintegrating, oral tablet extended release

Renal
Renal side effects have included oxalate and urate kidney stones.

Hyperoxaluria appears to be dose-related.

Nervous system
Migraine headache has been reported with a daily dose of 6 grams.

The manufacturer reports temporary dizziness and faintness may be associated with too rapid of a rate during intravenous administration.

Nervous system side effects have included dizziness, faintness, fatigue, and headache in less than 1% of patients. Migraine headache has also been reported.

Other
Other side effects have included flank pain in less than 1% of patients. Conditional scurvy has also been reported.

Conditional scurvy is reported to occur following excessive doses of ascorbic acid over a prolonged period of time. The mechanism of action for this condition is thought to be that large doses of ascorbic acid condition the patient over time for rapid clearance of ascorbic acid resulting in scurvy. The plasma levels of ascorbic acid appear to remain within normal limits. The actual existence of conditional scurvy remains controversial.

Gastrointestinal
Nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps appears to be associated with doses exceeding 2 g per day, although there have been some reports with as little as 1 g per day.

Esophagitis appears to be associated with prolonged or increased contact of ascorbic acid tablets with the esophageal mucosa.

Gastrointestinal side effects have included nausea, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and esophagitis.

Hematologic
Hematologic side effects have included hemolysis.

The majority of hemolysis reports have been associated with patients who have concurrent glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.

Local
Local side effects have included transient mild soreness at the site of injection.

The compound is Vitamin C. :silly:
