Ok i know i have asked this question before about the raw and cooked weight of chicken and which one i measure my protein on and that i have been told to measure it on the raw weight. I cooked some chicken last night for a few meals and the raw weight was 900g when i was done cooking it the weight was only 400g what the fuck is going on here either i am getting ripped off and need to start buying my chicken somewere else or this is normal?

Something doesnt seem right with that chicken.....

How are you cooking it?
Is it skinless?

You should always base it on raw weight, but yeah, the weight should not drop by THAN much once cooked.

I know Mince loses alot of weight once cooked!

Give it a shot, you're only TESTing it...

u are not getting ripped off,u are getting in 22g of protein per 100g of chicken right, now u are are cooking it and dehdrating it,all that is lost is water... so if u are having 300g raw weight chicken per meal, u have 3 meals in 900g. divide 400g/3 = 133.33g of chicken per meal,it will still give u 66g of protein... but u must be eating chicken biltong if u have gone and let it cook to that level

@dj ok i fully understand what you saying and it makes sense but i have been told some places inject their chicken with extra water to make it weigh more to make more bucks so for eg: if the chicken breast was 200g after they finish injecting it with water it is now close to 300g so i am calculating the protein on 300g when in fact i should be calculating it on 200g dont know if this makes sense to you or if this is even true? I dont cook it dry like bilton i use my george forman grill and it is still soft and juicy but the drip tray ends up with a shit load of water it is nearly full to the brim. Oh yeah and these are chicken breast no skin or bone i only buy chicken fillet breast

Something smells fishy with that chicken....If you buy it frozen, that is possible, they could fill it up with water and it would add weigh, but when you thaw the chicken it should lose all that water! When do you weigh your chicken? when its frozen or thawed out?

I weigh it frozen but have weighed it thawed as well and there is not a drastic difference. The drastic difference comes in once it has been cooked.

@DJ I get my chicken from a butcher in springfield park in durban i have tried 2 brands the first one was called rockland poultry they dropped in weight quiet a bit once cooked and the second brand i tried was called rocky rooster they lost even more weight once cooked. The chicken is really soft and tender and the price is not bad at all R24 per kg. I used to buy my chicken from bluff meat supply the branch in durban north they were a few rand more expensive not to much more and not much water came out of them so the weight remained close to the raw weight but they were tough and shit so i stopped buying them

Yeah your chicken is sounding dodge,if I cook a 100g fillet (raw) the final weight is usually between 80-90g cooked

Sounds about right to me. I buy from P@P at around R37/Kg. At least i dont have these problems. Remember - Chicken breast should cook really quick. When the colour changes its cooked. No need to cook till its dry. Should be juicy.

Well thats the thing i dont cook it until it is dry it is very juicy just a shit load lighter. I think i will buy some chicken from pnp and cook that to compare the weight once cooked. The only thing is that the last time i checked the price on the chicken fillet at pnp it was like around R55 per kg which works out a bit expensive over the month. I also guess at the price i am paying for my chicken i am using at the moment what can i expect the place that sells it is in a indian area as well so it would not surprise me that it is dogge looks like im going to have to start buying my chicken from somewere else

This is a fact, had a friend that worked in a chicken packing place and they inject water in the breasts to make up the weight. U can never tell what the weight is if ur buying it frozen.
I buy my chicken from fruit and veg. THey dont bs the folk that much. lol

Why's the chicken so expensive up there? Down here in the Cape I pay R18/kg at PnP, and they dont lose alot of water after cooking, e.g. 300g thawed, 270g cooked.

Sorry guys Apparently it is true, cause its happened to certain people already, so I’m not taking any chances !!

Durban chickens are leaner and well cut. They're so bad-ass they pluck their own feathers.

Suppose its the same reason why Diesel is more expensive in Joburg. . .

I thought they eradicated bird flu? And Cape Town chickens are mass monsters, I'm talking the size of turkeys here. Mass Monsters vs Veiny Twigs, no contest here I'm afraid B)

why even take the chance of buying dodge meat becuase its a bit cheaper...rather buy at a reputable place where you know that the checks and balances are in place to ensure the quality is of a higher standard....

Sorry to go off-topic here, but Deadgoat, if you just recently converted to Islam, and you are fasting, I would think you pretty serious about your religion so just wanted to know if you do know about "halaal" products? I dont think PnP keep Halaal ? Well not in any stores I have seen?
