O yeah, ther was a guy in Durban that died 6-7 months ago that had life cover and it didnt pay out because the guy was on steroids and didnt disclose it in the contract.
Now his wife/kids/gf has no money and his income is lost in the family. Sucks man...

This i want to challenge - how did he die? How do they blame it on steroids?

It was probably a genetic disorder, but if the insurance companys investigate and run tests they won't pay out. Any gap they can get they'll try get out of paying, even if the death was nothing to do with steroids, but he tested for +ve for it.
I worked for a long term insurance company a few years back and some claims were declined on the most ridiculous insignificant non disclosures that had nothing to do with the death.

So i have a headache and a bud gives me a sched 3 painpill, i fall, they test and dont pay out?
I cant believe that would stand in court?!?!?!

THe onus is on you to take it to the Ombudsman and prove the insurance company wrong.
I don't know the details of this obviously, but guarantee if there was no previous heart condition disclosed on the application, and he died of a heart attack and steroids were found in the system, the claim would be declined. They'd get a doctor to back the claim AAS are linked to heart attacks.
Insurance indusrty is fucking disgrace-they work on a bonus structure of claims declined.

the thing about insurance is that everyone bitches about them until they need them...have you ever checked out the cost of a simple athroscopy for a knee injury or even a simple thing like a broken leg...with the slightest complication the costs can easily hit over 100K...a mate recently tore the ligaments in his knee and needed surgery....just to cover the difference between what the MA paid and what he was charged was in excess of 25k....imo its a necessary evil.....

anyways on topic...i read an article some years ago in Time magazine where doctors worldwide where changing the approach to heart attacks and focusing on the possibility that heart attacks could be caused by a virus. In many instances healthy fit guys with low cholesterol and no history of heart disease have died of heart attacks or have had heart attacks…interesting theory but shouldn`t detract from the fact that a healthy lifestyle always contributes to lowering the risk and visa versa…..

I'm talking about long term insurance-life insurance when they have to pay out death benefits-if they can get out of it they will.
Some medical aids are actually pretty decent at paying out for procedures
