UPDATE ON THE 02/09/09:

The South African Post Office takes urgent legal action
Pretoria – The Post Office has noted with shock and disappointment the increased levels of violence and criminal actions that flared up overnight. The Witspos, Tshwane, Germiston and Krugersdorp mail centres had to be temporarily closed on Tuesday evening to protect property and employees that are working following damage to property, threats of violence and intimidation at these centres. Normal operations at all the other mail centres continue after employees returned to work on Monday.

In response to this, the South African Post Office is applying for an urgent court interdict. The South African Post Office is also taking all appropriate measures to ensure the safety of our customers, employees and property.

“Following the agreement with the CWU, any industrial action is unprotected and the South African Post Office reserves the right to deal with such actions appropriately,

Less than 1% of Post Offices still closed to the public
Pretoria – A handful of Post Office branches in Gauteng are still closed since workers started returning to work on Monday. The South African Post Office (Sapo) is aware that some members of Communication Workers Union (CWU) may not yet be aware that the strike has been suspended and the taxi situation may also be impacting on our operations with employees unable to return to work due to lack of adequate transport.

CWU continues to communicate the agreement reached between both parties on Friday to its members, and the Post Office is confident that all operations will soon be back to normal. The South African Post Office is confident that it will address backlogs resulting from the strike in a week.
