Howsit,

Anyone here used the RAP 440 or 401? Preferably 440.. (MCJ maybe) Views on it please?

Thanks.

The RAP was predominantly issued to female police officers as its more compact and lighter than the Beretta Z88. I'm not sure if this is still the practice as I see most if not all the new female recruits carrying the Z88 these days. I'm under correction but think they are been phased out.

Why is it u ask Chapel? That would make it easier answering ur question. I don't "like" the RAP per se but any firearm is deadly in the right and capable hands. Difference between deadly and stoppage power though but that's dependent on the caliber and round velocity.

Ya think it was phased out a few years ago, from the little reading I can find it was used dominantly for female officers and as a small carry weapon.. I just like the description to be honest, its small, heavy and available in .40 and its cheap as its SA made, if I can find one to test fire and it seems alright I want to look at getting one.. Can't afford a glock which would be my first choice R6000-13k is just too much no matter which way you cut the quality debate..

Ok here's my honest opinion. If ur in a job where u will be possibly using your firearm every day then fork out the cash for a decent make. But if u just want one, we'll just to want one, then get a cheaper make. My personal handgun (private capacity) is a cheapie bro. Simple mass produced norinco 9mm imported from china which is basically a rip off of the "Star" make hence the star logo on the grip. It basically just lies in the safe loaded and "one up" in the chamber in case I need it for an emergency. I'm comfortable with it and it will do the job. No point forking out tens of thousands for sumthing that's just lying there. But ya a glock etc would be nice.....

I'm also not a huge fan of the .40 caliber. Most are bulky although taurus (I think) has a nice compact one that fits in your pants pocket. The rounds are damn expensive compared to 9mm but what isn't expensive lately. But yes if its stopping power u want then that's the way to go.

Look for a private owner looking to sell. They sell them for next to nothing to dealers and then they in turn sell them for rediculous prices.

Agree completely with that. I also looked at the norinco's, but the china aspect makes me a little wary but will still consider them. I have been using 9mm and .38 my whole life but whenever I get a .40 in my hands I just love it, I have considered the price aspect though on ammo which is a very real problem these days, so may look for the 9mm one (401)..

Will definitely look for a private sale, my father has friends who have owned gun shops and I know all too well the profit they slap on them. Bit ridiculous sometimes..

Thanks for the input.

Guys from my recolection arent Dessert Eagles illegal in SA? I had a Norinco 9mm, after 1 year the firing pin broke, rendering it useless... Was also a mission and a half to get that replaced... perhaps that was because im fairly inexperienced in that field... but dont think an important part like that should give in so quick!?

nope they are legal. But they are a waste of time in my opinion, I have used one and it honestly was the most impractical weapon I have ever used.. Did you buy it new? Norinco parts shouldn't be too much of a problem to come across..

But the look and intimidation factor of Desert Eagles are just above and beyond... I bought it new... anyways got rid of it after that... Had a brand new blue chrome Z88 and loved that...

ha ha you have to bicep curl that thing to get it out of the holster.. Z88 is nice, didn't even think about it, still got .40 stuck in my head though.. How long is the licensing process now, anyone? 2years? If you don't get rejected?

When it comes to firearms you want something that is reliable.
You don't want a dude standing in your living room and when you have him in the sights pull the triger and nothing.

I grew up with Z88's as my dad is a police career officer and i've put 1000's of round through them in my lifetime but I'm personally a H&K man but its tough spending R13k on a 9mm.

My second option is Glock17

H&K is amazing, but there's that price tag ;) personally I have a glock fetish. They are the AKs of handguns, utilitarian to the max which is highly appealing.. I have found a 23 at R6000, which is my favourite glock, but that is still steep for me. If I were to take from the 9mm range, I would definitely go for the 17 though, great all round weapon..

Nice thing about the RAP is that it is full machined steel, so if it doesn't go bang you can just throw it at him haha

My 2 cents....you need to 1st establish are you going to carry 24/7 OR is the firearm going to reside in the safe.

If your answer is carry, Glock 19 (9mm) and 23 (10mm - I think). They are the compact version, and the G19 still holds 15 + 1. Believe me carry is k@k. It jabs you in the hip, pinches the groin UNTILL you find a holster that works and get use to carrying.

The Hammerless, Safteyless Glock is what I loved, 1 up and ready to go!!

I understand the new CZ's are awesome but Pricey. Maybe look for a Gen 3 Glock, as the Gen 4 have been out for a while??

My G19 was fixed to my hip untill I started leavin it @ home for the missus.
Still miss the Glockmeister everyday!!!

PS: Join gunsite.co.za, they are a wee bit Glock prone, but you'll get perfect guidance there...

Oh definitely won't be for 24/7 carry. Occasional carry and mostly just in the safe and then for range shooting, although competing with a .40 is suicide haha.. The 23 is .40, the 20 is 10mm.. Can't remember which ones are the compacts though. The 23 fits me well though, so does the 17..

The new CZs prices are just ridiculous, where did they even come up with them? Good heritage from the CZ75 range but still, a little too steep. The one I found doesn't list what gen it is, but at 6k I doubt its one of the newer models although it is apparently unfired..
