Not sure what area you are in but if you are in JHB go to Flora guns, you can rent firearms there and shoot them. Have a feel, shoot them and choose the once that best suits you.

When hunting, my rifle of choice is the .270

I've shot anything from rooibok to wildebeest with that, great accuracy at long distances, if it doesn't do enough damage, you're not shooting well enough! :P

They are ok. better than a cricket bat. Get it and shoot it often, go for training ( proper training ). Save while you are doing all of this and once you have enough get sommething a bit better CZ, S&W, Glock,Sig etc.

I got a Glock 19 Gen 3, its BEAUTIFUL!

However, I REALLY struggle to conceal it when I am carrying it!

If any of you have a glock, do you guys have a special holster that you have, or one that you prefer using! I have a leather one now, cant remember the name, but they supposedly the best, but I really still struggle to conceal!

Thanks Gents!

Get yourself a proper holster and throw away the leather one.

No problem B) , rather don't resurrect threads though, I see one of the other mods has made a general Firearms thread where you can put the link (I think its there already) and everyone will more than likely see it.

Ok, i got my training done so now its me and the SAPS for competency and licenses. I have a question on something that is unclear.

Is it a must to go and apply for the competency and then only go buy for firearm or can both occur at the same time?

You can't tell me that is not beautiful.

@ Vega, apply for competency then license as far as I know. You can buy a firearm, you just can't take possession of it or use it without the competency and license, some places/private sales will not do the sale without the competency at all but obviously for inheritance purposes and so on you can own the firearm but not use it till you have done all the required nonsense, there also used to be a loophole with temp licenses but that is closed now.

Then again, my knowledge is probably outdated, maybe SV will know.

Luckily I did mine 15yrs back, license remains but competency is redone every 5 yrs. It is really hard to get a licence these days so good luck. Happy with my .357 5 inch.

Chapel, I am not saying it is Not beautiful, But I prefer steel;-)

You can do both your competancy and license application in one go. When you buy the FA, ask the shop to complete the application right there.

You can then do your motivation. Again, see if you can register with a recognized association, so that you can get an endorsement with them. Also, when motivating, see if you can motivate it for sport shooting etc, since it would get easier approved (with the endorsement) than self defence. For self defence you have to prove that you have been a victim of vicious crime before, that your current work there is the possibility of vicious crime and that the area that you are working and staying in, are crime hotspots. Please note that you would have to show all of the above, in order for the SD application to go through (hence I say that sport shooting is easier).

You should have your license in 4-6 months from the date of application (given that your competancy application went in on the same time.

Good luck!

Very nice.

However, I am still 'n fan of the old R1 (7.62mm) instead of the normal 223 (5.56mm). Especially in close combat etc.

I know that weight and amount of ammo carried made the difference. However, there are some countries which are thinking about going back to the 7.62mm.

R1 is my favourite rifle. The Scar comes in 7.62 as well.

The British are already shifting back to 7.62 in some cases, their new designated marksmen weapon is in 7.62. I read a report where they said too many enemy bodies are being viewed with old 5.56 scars on them so the shift back towards something with more punch, or at least the addition of something, will be better for stopping power.
